It’s been almost 20 years since Tumblr first launched, Pandas, and if you were around during its heyday in the early 2010s, you probably remember the chaos that came with it. Sure, every social media platform has its fair share of random thoughts and questionable takes, but Tumblr had a special talent for turning oddly specific observations into comedy gold.
And the best part? That kind of humor is still alive and well! We took a trip down memory lane by exploring the Curated Tumblr subreddit, where people share screenshots of posts covering everything from political debates to the little moments in life. This time, we're focusing on the lighter side of things from the thread. So sit back, enjoy a little nostalgia, and keep scrolling, Pandas!

According to Statista, the number of social media users worldwide is expected to reach 5.75 billion in 2026, with mobile devices helping platforms reach even more people. And honestly, it’s not hard to see why. From posting life updates on Facebook to falling into a TikTok scrolling marathon when you meant to watch just one video, social media has become a huge part of everyday life, Pandas. But while every platform has its own quirks, some have developed a culture that makes them stand out from the rest. One platform that has always had a personality of its own? Tumblr.

Founded in 2007 by American web developer David Karp, Tumblr quickly carved out its own corner of the internet. The microblogging platform became home to countless communities, particularly fandoms where people bonded over their favorite things. Its relative anonymity also gave users more freedom to experiment with their online identities and share thoughts they might not have posted under their real names. And, of course, it gave people a place to be wonderfully weird without having to explain themselves.

The story behind Tumblr is pretty interesting, too. David Karp was just 21 when he founded the platform while working as a consultant from his mother’s apartment in New York City. He wanted to create something different from the increasingly commercialized social media platforms of the time. And that vision showed in Tumblr’s design. In A Tumblr Book: Platform and Cultures, researchers explore how features such as chronological reblogging and the absence of prominent public follower counts helped set Tumblr apart from more metrics-driven platforms. Instead of making popularity the main goal, Tumblr gave users more freedom to experiment, share their interests, and find communities of people who loved the same wonderfully niche things they did.

And there’s a good reason why Tumblr’s approach to social media is worth looking at more closely. On many platforms, it’s easy to get caught up in the numbers game. How many likes did your post get? Why does someone else have thousands of followers while your latest selfie barely gets any attention? What starts as a fun way to share your life can quickly turn into a competition, especially when popularity starts to feel like a measure of your worth.

Research suggests that this kind of social comparison can take a toll on mental well-being, particularly among young adults. Studies have found that people who regularly compare their achievements, physical appearance, and social lives with those of their peers tend to experience higher stress levels and poorer psychological well-being. Research conducted during and after the COVID-19 pandemic has also linked increased internet use with more frequent social comparisons and greater psychological distress. After all, when you're constantly exposed to carefully curated snapshots of other people's lives, it's easy to feel like everyone else is doing better than you.

This is where Tumblr's approach offered a refreshing alternative. With customizable blogs, reblogging, and communities built around shared interests, the platform gave users more opportunities to express themselves without making public popularity the main event.Tumblr certainly wasn't free from drama or social pressure, but its culture showed that online spaces could be about shared passions and self-expression, rather than constantly chasing likes and followers.

Of course, that doesn't mean every social media platform is harmful or that enjoying a popular post is a bad thing. What matters is being mindful of how we use them and remembering that our worth has very little to do with a follower count or how many people double-tap a photo. Whether you're scrolling through posts from Tumblr, watching TikTok videos, or catching up with friends on Instagram, social media is at its best when it helps us feel connected and free to be ourselves, rather than leaving us feeling like we have to compete for attention.

Women can face particularly frustrating experiences when discussing their health with a doctor. Their concerns about pain and reproductive health may not always receive the attention and understanding they need.
Worse, they may even deal with insensitive and inappropriate responses. And if you’re wondering how bad things can get, here are some stories shared in a recent Reddit thread.
These accounts only prove that not every medical professional deserves to keep their license. If you have similar experiences you want to share, feel free to do so in the comments below.

"I guess you must be serious, if you brought your husband with you."
I was 8 months in to trying to figure out the cause of chronic pain that was getting progressively worse, and was being pretty much brushed off. This was the first time my husband went with me to an appointment, mostly just to drive me because I was in so much pain. Later we would find a tumor the size of a baseball in my abdomen ruining one of my kidneys.

I was having an endometrial biopsy, first one. The old man doctor became irate with me because I let out a cry of pain. (I was in absolute agony). He looked at me with absolute disgust and said if I couldn't control myself, I could get up and leave. I suffered in silence, shaking uncontrollably. He never said another word to me, but his nurse came in and hugged me. I will never know why, but he was soon after relieved of his job and I cheered that day.
That man HURT ME. Badly.

It was a psychiatrist who thought the band tshirt I was wearing was demonic and the reason for my anxiety. He prescribed me converting to his religion. When I gave him my email, and it was from my university he said “I thought only smart people went there”.

The stories on this list highlight a problem that many women face during their doctor's visits. According to pain psychologist Dr. Samantha Meints, women are "viewed as hysterical," which is why most of their health concerns are pathologized in a psychiatric way.
"Some of this is just due to social and cultural values," Dr. Meints said in an interview with Harvard Health. "It's a value for men to remain stoic in the face of pain or stress, while women are often more social and seek more support. The way they do that may be to share their difficult experiences, including pain."

Oh my goodness. The worst was after I’d had a couple of miscarriages and was pregnant again, seeing a specialist and found out at my six week ultrasound that pregnancy wasn’t viable either, but the baby had a heartbeat, but it was slowing so they were sure I would lose it too.
The specialist doc I was seeing got us in her office and she started laying out the plan for trying again “after this one’s over.”
The complete and total lack of empathy for me as I was processing the loss of a third pregnancy was devastating. I was livid and speechless at the same time.
I never went back to see her again.
20+ years later I can still get upset about it.
I work in the medical field now and have always taken the time to let someone process the news when it’s bad. It’s just not that hard.

“No, that medication does not cause weight gain. It’s your depression that’s causing you to eat more.” Said to me by *two doctors*.
Flash forward a year - my cat is sick. They give her an appetite stimulant.
**Appetite. Stimulant.**
Same med as the one “not” causing my excessive eating and weight gain.

He told me I was pregnant infront my immigrant mother when I was only 13.
I WAS NOT. He didnt even test me or anything. I went in complaining of lower abdominal pain, and then it turned out I had blood in my bladder from an infection.

There are also differences in pain thresholds between men and women. According to clinical psychologist Dr. Robert Jamison, women are perceived to have a higher pain tolerance, which may lead to the frequent dismissal of their conditions.
"There's always this sense that women can go through childbirth, so they can withstand much worse pain than men," he said.

Telling my mom's story:
In the late 90's she had extreme fatigue, unexpected weight gain, and a few other symptoms. She had to drink caffeine nearly constantly just to function. She could sleep for 12+ hours if she didn't have an alarm. She went to the doctor who told her, basically, that her sedentary lifestyle was the problem.
She was busy raising 5 kids (age 9+) as a single mother working graveyard shifts at the airport to make ends meet. Meals were served, laundry was done, us kids were making it to school on time, the house was cleaned - she was not sedentary, but he wouldn't listen. Doc basically said "You're fat. Lose weight."
Years later she went to a different doctor. They did a quick blood check and what do you know it - she has Hypothyroidism.

Went into premature labor at 16, so yeah I was a kid. Got pregnant my first time! Anyway, he put a speculum inside me to see if my water had broken. I was crying and tense, because it is uncomfortable as many of you know. A midwife held my hand, when I was starting to get a bit more upset he said and I quote “you weren’t crying when he shoved it up inside of you, were ya” referring to how I got pregnant. I was stunned. Even as an immature teen, i knew there was no way that was okay. I told my mam, who was in the waiting area, she ran around the hospital looking for him. I told a lovely delivery nurse who was amazing!! I guess he got fired because he never appeared at the new maternity hospital that opened ( all maternity hospitals shut down and went to one).

"The reason you can't push your baby out (after four hours of pushing) is because you chose an epidural". Turns out he wouldn't come out because he had a double knot in his cord and every time he breeched he was starved of oxygen. Was too late for a C-section and luckily the next doctor was competent and got him out safely in one push/contraction. I would have punched her in the face if I wasn't preoccupied birthing a child. Also, the epidural was the best choice according to second doctor, as they had to cut me up to get babe out safely.

Gender bias is one of the many ugly realities we deal with, and very unfortunately, it also happens in the medical field. Experts refer to this as "medical gaslighting," and according to a 2024 study, it is more prevalent among women.
The study revealed that 45% of women who were going through genital pain were told they "just needed to relax more." 39% were made to feel "crazy."

Regarding my terrible cramps and mental health issues that came on only when I have (or am about to have) my period: "it might get better if you have children".
As if that completely baseless and unscientific wives-tale is justification for bringing a child into this world to *maybe* fix my PMDD??
I've had both male and female Drs suggest this to me. Unbelievable.

Not necessarily what you were going for here, but one time I went to urgent care for a UTI and the hottest doctor I have ever seen in my life walked in and said, “Yeah, your urine is pretty dirty.”.

#1 female Dr. refused to prescribe me HRT for perimenopausal symptoms that made me feel like a dumb angry zombie. Told me, "Just power through like a real woman. I did." I told her to get lost before I walked out.
#2 saw male specialist for weird nerve pain in my hand. Completely ignores what I came in for and proceeds to wax poetic about his hot wheels collection.

There's also a distinction between acute and chronic pain that, according to University of Sydney psychology professor Louise Sharpe, can complicate the discussion. As she explains, chronic pain becomes more difficult to deal with because it requires long-term treatment.
"Doctors wonder why patients don't improve with the same suite of treatments that worked for other patients. Meanwhile, patients want doctors to believe their pain is legitimate," Sharpe wrote.

What are you crying for? You wanted this.
Said to me by the anesthesiologist as I was being prepped for the d&c I needed because I’d had a miscarriage and not passed the remains. I absolutely did not want any of that.

Not a doctor but a psychiatrist. I was about 12 years old and I was seeing him for medication to treat severe anxiety. I was barely able to eat so I was at least 20 pounds underweight when I started going. We found a medication that worked and I finally started getting my weight back up. I was still skinny but finally in a healthy range
During one of my appointments, he told me that I needed to watch what I ate because I was starting to get fat. My mom was *livid.* We left the appointment early and never went back
I actually ran into him at the grocery store about 8 years ago. He recognized me and at least had the decency to look ashamed.

Just got done nursing my first child and was ready to back on my ADHD medication. I was seeing a new primary care doctor since my old one retired. She asked me why I needed this medication and I told her my diagnosis should be in my medical chart. That apparently was not enough since she wanted details, when I explained my challenges she then said “how does your husband deal with you?”.

Doctors can't always provide the answers patients are looking for. However, at the very least, they can treat patients with compassion and respect. Seeking medical help is already intimidating, and dismissive, condescending behavior can only make the experience more frustrating.
Ladies, has a doctor ever said something that left you shocked or questioning your own concerns? Share your stories in the comments.

I kept fainting from low blood sugar and the doctor told me I had a case of the "faints". Passed out later at a concert and almost had to go to the hospital.

A doctor told me that my pain in my lower abdomen was “probably just ovulation”, I knew he was wrong, went for a second opinion and was sent for an emergent CT. Ended up being appendicitis and was on the verge of rupture by the time the surgeon had me on the table.
Imagine assuming you know what ovulation pain feels like over the word of a woman who had been ovulating regularly for over a decade already at the time.

He jokingly-but-not-*really*-jokingly complained that I hadn't shaved my legs before the appointment. He was a general practitioner, it was my first ever appointment with him, and the appointment was for a basic physical. I was 14.

I suffer from cyclical vomiting syndrome. When my illness was at its worst I was in and out of the ER and was down to 94 pounds. For reference I’m 5”3 and my normal weight is around 115-120.
I went to a new GP to get bloodwork and was explaining my illness and she looks at me and says “well, so many women want to be skinny and pretty like you”
Like ma’am, I can’t even lift my own arm I’m so weak. Needless to say I never went back to her.

Not me, but my wife and I was in the room.
She was seeking treatment for a neck injury that was causing debilitating headaches. The doctor told my wife point blank "I won't treat you until you lose 40% of your body weight." She was heavy at the time, but her weight was not a factor in this injury.
We got a second opinion rapidly.

He told me I was to young for a hysterectomy and might decide I want more kids. I'm 48. I have 4 kids (16,16,25, 28) and 4 grandkids (7,6,2,2). I also have severe PCOS. I'm in the process of getting a second opinion.

The next week she was rushed into emergency surgery to remove her gallbladder.

I have frequent headaches and migraines. The doctor asked me if I work in front of a computer…I said yes….”well there you go that’s why you have headaches! Stop staring at the screen!!!” Like I have a choice? How am I supposed to work!!
At OBGYN I was diagnosed with PCOS/PMOS and the doctor told me I need to lose weight and eat basically like a rabbit. I was 125lbs 😩.

Female doctor scraping my uterine lining for a biopsy that offers no sedatives or pain relief. I was gagging from the pain and the intense feeling of my insides being scraped away made me nauseous. She told me to take deep breaths. When she was done, she said “wow, that was hell for you!”
????
Any woman who’s undergone a procedure whether it be an IUD removal or also an endometrial biopsy will understand this pain.

Struggled my whole life with body / eating disorder issues. Turned to binge eating / laxatives in college and had my nutrition professor notice the signs and convince me to seek out my doctor at home. Was slightly overweight. Went in for the appointment and doctor (a man) looked at me and said “oh. You’re fine. When your mom said it was an eating disorder thing we thought you were going to come in looking like skin and bones”. Went on to struggle for 5 more years.

I told the doctor I was having pancreas pain as I've had pancreatitis a few times already and knew the symptoms and what it feels like. He said "listen dollface, there's no way you can feel your pancreas you probably have a stomach ache." I was indeed having a flare up.

"You just need a man to take care of you." - Psychiatrist
I was 41 and had been living on my own for 10 years.#29
Went to get an STI check because I was starting a new relationship, and had asked my partner to do the same. The doctor was astonished that I was doing this proactively when I didn't have any symptoms. He sighed and said "I guess this is just what 'modern women' are like".

ER nurse in my case. 1996. I was 22 years old, visiting my brother who lived in another state. Intense right quadrant pain sent me to the ER, and they needed an ultrasound right away so I had to be “filled up” and not allowed to drink the water. Received catheter on the spot (my first), and writhed in pain during insertion . ER nurse chided me, saying unless I’d birthed a child, I didn’t know pain. It wasn’t necessary a bad thing to say, but it was very unkind, and I was a frightened young adult. Turned out I had a large dermoid ovarian cyst, which I had surgically removed when I returned to my home state.

It was a female gynecologist, which makes it worse.
I was trying to explain to her how bad my period pains were, and how I'm bipolar. I wanted to go on birth control to try and regulate things.
She told me, "Well, what would your husband think? Don't you want to have a baby?"
To her, I was just a baby maker and had no opinions. My body belonged to my supposed husband.#32
Went into labor and delivery at 37 weeks for decreased fetal movement. This is specifically what you are told to do by any OB. The intern on shift that night said "maybe I needed some medication" because I was anxious.
2 weeks later he walked into my room to deliver my baby. I had him removed from my team.#33
She said my feet hurt because I needed better shoes. A little over a year later I had surgery to break and reset a bone that had been broken years before and wasn't treated so it healed wrong. If she had simply done an x-ray she would've seen that my first metatarsal was wrong.

My foot started hurting when I got pregnant. I was told it’s pregnancy and what did I expect. Legs hurt while pregnant.
I got diagnosed with stage 3 melanoma 7 months pregnant on my foot.#36
Doctor asked my weight for dosage calculation and he looked at me and said “are you sure? You look like a much bigger girl”.

Doc said there was nothing wrong with my back, I was just sad cause I was fat. I was only about 6 mos postpartum, had a very manual labor military job. Turned it there were 2 discs exploded in my lower back. Awesome work.

I don't know about worse, but a lifetime of being brushed off because of my weight has me scared of thinking I'll never get meaningful help. For reference, I had been morbidly obese since I was THREE. I reached my goal weight at 28 (I'm 32F now).
Even now, at my goal weight, written in my record by my weight management doctor, stating I am at clinical goal weight I still have doctors telling me I need to lose weight. They then immediately follow up with suggesting I see a weight management doctor.
After stating that I already do and tell them that this is my goal weight per my doctor's own analysis and that she's been working with me for 8 years they still suggest I should 'keep going' and 'it's good for my health to lose more'.
This was stated at my last physical actually, when all I needed was an ENT refferal.....#39
I’m 8 weeks pregnant. Out of nowhere, I start having severe anxiety attacks, every 15 minutes. I’ve never had them before. I am having trouble breathing, my chest is tight, I’m crying uncontrollably. I then lose the ability to speak. I head to the ER. The male doctor looks at the notes taken at admission that my husband gave - exactly what I typed above. The doctor, in a real agitated manner, asked me, “was this a planned pregnancy?” I shook my head no. He let out a sigh, “here’s my advice…don’t get pregnant”. And gave me a shot of Ativan. I went home and an hour later, I had a miscarriage. Come to find out that the anxiety attacks were caused by the severe, sudden drop in hormones, from my body going through a miscarriage. What a jerk.

Diagnosed with cervical cancer. First meeting with oncologist who wanted to do an internal exam with the speculum. I mentioned I had anxiety and it was painful for me (I mean, it's uncomfortable for all of us but the cancer made it especially worse for me). Without warning, he pretty aggressively grabbed my legs and pushed them to the side, saying "well, you better suck it up and get used to it, because you'll be having a lot more".

When I told my GP I had been short of breath for 4+ months, started out hearing crackling sounds when I laid down at night, which progressed to where I coughed up a clear bubbly phlegm any time I tried to lay down and had to start sleeping upright.
“**Well you did gain 10 pounds since I saw you last year! You need to work on losing weight.**”
Two weeks later I got admitted to the ICU with congestive heart failure on my 24th birthday. That ten pounds was built up fluid on my chest because my heart wasn’t able to pump properly so more and more fluid just kept building up. I very nearly lost my life and still 4 years later struggle DAILY with everyday tasks because my heart is bad. I’ll have to have a heart transplant at some point in my life without a doubt. Got an ICD in my chest that’ll need replaced every 7-10 years. I’m going to be living with this for the rest of my life. And my life expectancy has decreased significantly.
I try to have a little grace and say maybe my GP missed it because who expects a perfectly healthy 23 year old to get heart failure? But like. Honestly. When you google “crackling sounds when I breathe” like the second thing it gives you is heart failure. The first is pneumonia. My GP told me to eat less.
Also the same guy who refused to send me for a scan when I had a kidney stone that wouldn’t pass because he thought I “might want kids someday and the scans could hurt my fertility”.#43
My gynecologist was up literally inside me and started giving me weight loss tips and “suggestions.” I reminded her, furious, that I had gone into eating disorder recovery a little over a year ago. She said “being a little overweight is just as dangerous or more as being a little underweight.”
I was maybe a size 8 at that time? I had gained a decent amount of weight, sure, up from being a size 0/2 and way, way too thin for my frame.
I obviously never went back, wrote scathing reviews, and moved on, but her saying those things to me while I was so incredibly vulnerable both literally physically in that moment, and mentally/ emotionally while I was still figuring out how to navigate recovery- it really upset me. I also had a ton of trauma around gyno stuff as I’d been dealing with cervical cancer/ hpv things for over a decade at that point and was already incredibly anxious just being there.
It was horrible. She is horrible.#44
I have strabismus (cross eye) and he told me, well, you'll scare off all the boys looking like that.

Asked for information about birth control. Told me he doesn’t believe in birth control and that I should measure my temperature every morning. If my temperature is higher, then I should know I’m ovulating…Great, thanks Doc….

Me - in approx 2002 suffering from an ED and a crippling anxiety disorder seeing my (male) GP at 24 because my heart palpitations were keeping me from sleeping and I was legit scared o was going to lose my life. My hair was falling out everywhere. I was 5’9” and somewhere between 110-115 when my normal weight was still a very lean 135.
“Wow. You look fantastic. Still single? You’re in NYC now, right? My brother is a photographer there and does very well for himself.”
He gave me his brother’s number and no referral for any of the issues I can in for, other than the advice to “take a few days off and get a massage to relax a bit.”.#47
Had an endoscopy come back clean. Doc said: well maybe the pain is caused by emotions, as I see you are taking an anti-depressant.
#48
I was having outbursts of anxiety and depression. Doctor told me that I should have two babies (not just one, because then it would be depressed like me) to resolve it.
I was Vitamin B12 and D deficient. Vitamins solved the issue. I had to figure that out myself.#49
Updated my after visit summary note with my male gyno. I had never had an issue until this.
"Was surprised and confused by her weight and proceeded to cry hysterically."
Not how I remember it.#50
Have you asked your husbands permission to get an IUD? It was a female doctor too.
#51
"Why is it so important to you to get a PCOS diagnosis? You aren't trying to have kids, and there's no treatment anyway."
SPOILER ALERT there is treatment, it doesn't only impact your fertility, and it was ruining my life.#52
Welp. It happened recently. I was getting my IUD removed and I am in what they would call a "geriatric" stage in life but still able to get pregnant. The doctor said to me that I am a bit late. Not impossible but it might be harder. That the ideal age to have a child is 16. Yes, Sixteen. The doctor was a woman, too.

Not a specific event, but for over a decade I've been told that my insanely itchy legs are psychosomatic. I've seen various doctors and had tests done and since nothing is coming back positive for anything, people assume I'm making it up. Sure, because I WANT to be digging holes in my skin and hurting myself because the constant itching keeps me up all night.
Finally saw a different GI doc the other week due to gallbladder concerns, and when I mentioned the itchy skin, he casually goes 'Oh, that could be a symptom of (various intestinal issues we're investigating). Not surprising at all, maybe some of these treatments will help.'
My response was, quote, 'Are you kidding me? You've seen this?' and we talked about it a bit more. I wanted to cry. Someone finally believes me!!
Edit: okay, wasn't expecting anyone to also have the same thing!! So, I have gallbladder issues in that it's basically unalive, but I'm not in pain, and I just found out last month because I had a severe chest pain attack that landed me in the ER. I'm not getting it removed yet but it doesn't seem to function anymore, I don't know if it's the exact cause or not. The GI specialist I saw put me on a med that helps with bile salt absorption, because a lot my stomach problems could be due to malabsorpion. And seriously, I'm not even the full two weeks into the med cycle and my near-daily bathroom runs after every meal are GONE. I also don't have issues with dairy, so I wonder if I'm not actually lactose sensitive but it was all gut biome stuff. I'm waiting to hear back from the GI on a long term solution but colestipol has saved me and I hope it's a step in the right diagnostic direction!

I told him I had reoccurring throbbing pain near my groin for years and that sometimes it seemed to be triggered by certain foods. He said “well, stop eating those foods”.
He made no further attempts to figure out what was causing my pain and I continue to suffer today.
Edit: I want to thank everyone for your concern! I have seen many doctors since then and had ultrasounds. Nothing was wrong according to them. No further attempts were made to solve the problem.
I even went to the ER and they told me they would operate on me to see if it was my appendix but that even if it wasn’t, they would remove it anyway.
So, I’ve just learned to live with the pain.

"Your pain isn't bad enough for it to be anything worth investigating." As I'm crying on the exam table. Turned out to be endometriosis after I saw a doctor that wasn't evil.

I had an early miscarriage (8wks) and the OB said it wasn’t anything to be upset about because most women wouldn’t have even known they were pregnant yet. He was such a jerk.
#58
I went to the ER because I was bleeding heavily.. I’m talkin going through a tampon and pad every half hour.. I went alone thinking I’d be fine. The doctor refused to listen to me and said that at my age (I was about 23 or 24 at the time), I should know what a heavy cycle is. He discharged me and I continued to bleed. I went to another ER and come to find out that I was actively miscarrying.

Had severe acne and was going through the process of getting on accutane.
Because I had a history of depression I was required to talk to a therapist.

Wasn't so much what he *said,* but when he did some testing on me and it was negative, i asked him if i could possibly have a particular disorder I'd recently learned about. he literally just laughed in my face, then moved on like I'd said nothing, and gave me a lecture about not using screens or eating anything for at least 4 hours before bed, even if that meant i couldn't do my homework (i was in high school at the time), and sent me on my way.
anyway, I'm now diagnosed with that thing i thought i had and doing much better thanks to treatment, but i had to drop out of school and lose the first half of my 20s to struggling to even work part time jobs before i got there.
honorable mention to the (FEMALE!!) OBGYN who told me i wasn't actually experiencing cramps when not menstruating, and that the pain was in fact my IBS, and I just couldn't tell the difference bc they're both in my belly.#63
My male ob told me my weight gain during pregnancy wasn’t all baby. And even when I measured 46 he wouldn’t induce. I ended up having a 12 lb 9 oz baby and lost 33 pounds in the hospital. When I next saw him I told him it was all baby.
#64
My female gyno got mad at me for nearly vomiting, crying out in pain and feeling too faint to leave on my own after IUD insertion. She humphed that she would have to use one of her other rooms while I recovered.
#65
Not said but on my first gyn appt at 16 the (female?!!) doctor put the salad tongs in me, opened them, and left the room. I started yelling after 1/2 hour and she rushed in and just clamped them shut real quick and left without removing them. Like less than 30 seconds. It pinched me real bad and i kept screaming until they came in and FINISHEd the whole thing. Without apologies.
The patriarchy would fall right down if women really weren't as evil and patriarchal as men.
I hate doctors.#66

Stayed at a buddies apartment who’d recently moved to a new city. We worked for the same company and I decided to come in the night before a meeting to hangout. The kitchen was unusable. Dirty dishes with food on them everywhere, piled high. Like, why even own that many dishes? The bathroom had a tub that wouldn’t drain, so there was like a foot of grey water in the tub. He was kind enough to “bail it out for me” the next morning when I went to have a shower. He then informed me he had only one towel, so I dried myself with a tshirt from the day prior. Alan buddy, you were a good friend but you lived like an animal.

During a Zoom meeting, we could see a coworker's background. Her cat was using the litter box, which was on the stove.
No one ate her holidsy potluck dish.

I lived in an apartment, many times when I was coming and going to work, the lady that lived next door would be sitting on the floor outside her door. I would always stop and say hello, or ask if she was alright. I had found out from management that she was a highly educated professor from one of the Ivy League universities, but had a mental breakdown. One day, I’m coming home from work, she is waiting at the elevator for me in a total panic. She has to show me something. She takes me to her door, tells me I need to leave all my electronics outside. She opens the door and I step inside to see that every square inch of her apartment is covered in tin foil, she then went into a rant about people spying on her, showing me a bottle of Mrs Butterworths pancake syrup and explaining how it was watching her. Yea…..that night we contacted her family, she was in the hospital for a few weeks after that.

There’s a difference between a home that looks lived-in and one that makes you wonder when anyone last picked up a cleaning cloth. A few clothes on the sofa or dishes waiting to be washed are hardly reasons to judge someone, because we all know life gets busy.
But when grime has built up on every surface and even finding a clean place to sit becomes a challenge, it’s understandable that guests might feel uncomfortable.

Hoarders turn me off. So many people just don't want to throw anything out. I feel sad for them. knew a guy who couldn't find his cat. after 3 weeks it started to stink and he finally found it, unlike of course.
I knew a guy who had a log cabin on the edge of state parkland. He turned his basement into multiple bedrooms for drunks and substance users to sleep in for a modest fee. He also had a collection of squirrel heads on a shelf on his front porch. He claimed he used them for weather forecasting. Their eyelids would open and close based on humidity.

Cigarette buts and ash everywhere. Its like the entire apartment was a big ashtray. The smell was overwhelming anf my clothes smelled the same after only being there an hour or so.

The way a house smells can shape a guest’s first impression before they’ve even taken off their shoes. You might overlook a cluttered coffee table, but a strong odor that hits you as soon as you walk through the door is much harder to ignore.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency notes that musty odors can indicate moisture problems or inadequate ventilation. So an unpleasant smell isn’t always a sign that someone hasn’t cleaned. Sometimes, there might be a bigger household issue that needs attention.

Sleepover at friend’s house. They gave me a mattress on the floor. No sheets, no pillow, no blanket. Just a mattress. Rich family. Live-in maid. They all had proper beds and linens. Told my friend I would walk home before sleeping like that. She gave me the blanket off her bed. I don’t know if they thought I’d bring my own or that’s just how they treated guests. She had been to my house so she knew that wasn’t how we did things. That night her father got drunk and threatened to take the lives all of us so we ran outside and hid. But it’s the image of the bare mattress that sticks with me.

A friend who was involved in local politics in the north-east and who was generally truthful (with me, at least) told a story of how he was knocking on doors once and was invited in by an elderly couple. They left him alone in the living room while they went to make tea, during which time the couple’s dog jumped onto the sofa and immediately shat on one of the cushions.
The husband walked in, tutted, shooed the dog off the sofa, turned the cushion over and offered my friend his tea as if nothing had happened.

The amount of properties I've been to in over 2 decades is well into the 4 digit range.
You ever had someone in your house and found yourself awkwardly apologising about the "mess"?
99% of the time, its honestly fine. Its not an operating theatre, its a home that is being actively lived in, especially if its a family home with kids running around etc
That 1% though, Christ. Its like you are just upset someone is living that way.
And it almost always seems like they have some sort of underlying/untreated MH or other problems contributing to it, because nobody thinking straight would let it get like that
Worst ones I've seen ended up with me ringing social services because they were elderly/vulnerable with no help coming in and I couldn't in good conscience do nothing, as those are the sort of people who "go" and nobody notices they are gone. This got worse after pandemic too as alot of people had their support yanked away during the peak and not given back.

Being a considerate host means thinking about whether your visitors feel welcome. Nobody expects a friend to prepare their home as though royalty is coming to dinner, but visitors should be able to use the bathroom without an unpleasant surprise.
Running out of toilet paper or finding no clean glass to drink from can make a visit unnecessarily awkward. A little preparation goes a long way towards making people feel at home.

Friend in school asked I wanted to stay over. He had silk sheets and no heating, that was coldest night of my life. In the morning we ate angel delight for breakfast and then I rode my bike home in the rain.

I saw dirty pads lying on the floor in a mountain of mess and soiled baby nappies were thrown from the window into the garden forming a pile that was attracting all sorts of species of flies. The counters were full of week old dirty dishes. A multigenerational family of good health live there, so not sure why it wasn’t so clean. I needed water but didn’t even want to drink it from the house. I left promptly.
Unfortunately for personal reasons I occasionally have to go but I refuse to eat or drink from there..

A friend invited a few of us round for afters drinks, there was empty crisp packets everywhere like the floor was a carpet of empty crisp packets. The toilet didn’t have a seat and looked like it hadn’t been cleaned since the 80s. Needless to say we booked a taxi, made our excuses and left pretty quickly.

Basic cleanliness matters for reasons beyond making a good impression with your guests. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, regular cleaning helps remove dirt and germs that can make people sick.
Wiping down frequently touched surfaces, washing dishes, doing laundry, and keeping kitchen counters clean can all help maintain a more hygienic home. Disinfecting every surface daily usually isn’t necessary, but staying on top of routine chores can stop dirt and germs from building up.

Extreme flea infestation.
Remember those really fluffy fake sheep fleece throw cushions that seemed to be a thing in the ‘00s? They had cream ones on the sofa. When I sat on the sofa, I could see little black dots crawling through the fleece towards me.
The cats’ fur was so thick with flea dirt that when you scritched them it got under your nails.
I had to stay there for a week and the whole time, no one in the family acknowledged the fleas’ existence, though they must have been getting bitten to pieces like I was.

A friend had gone to see a patient. They lived in a 5th floor flat.
She went to the kitchen to wash her hands. Opened the door and was confronted with a horse. Remember, 5th floor?

Her dad had his machete collection out and was sharpening them. He was talking to them like they were his friends; it was really bizarre. The guy was obsessed with knives and blades.
We decided to play at my house that night.
Eventually, that guy tried to take the life of my friend's mom with one of the machetes, and it was a whole ordeal. I lost my friend overnight; her mom moved her away and didn't give out any contact details. The state of your home may also affect how you feel. A recent study found a link between household clutter and lower psychological well-being. This means that living in a disorganized space may go hand in hand with feeling less satisfied with life and experiencing poorer mental health.
Keeping your home reasonably organized can help you feel more comfortable and at ease in your surroundings.

The Dad in the 90s was an alcoholic sheet metal worker he’s sober now but my friends and I were swimming when he came home. He stumbled into the backyard and flopped into the pool fully clothed with work boots.
He was floating face down like a corpse. I asked my friend if we should get him out. He seemed unconcerned saying his Dad was a scuba diver & could hold his breath long.
The mom came out yelling at the Dad who just started blowing bubbles face down. I left.

I was asleep on the couch. I woke up to my friend's dad leaning over me, just looking at me. I got up later and called my parents to come pick me up. Soon after that, my friend told me that his father said, "Your friend can not come over anymore. I was in junior high school, and I am a male.
Yep, dodged that bullet .... turns out the guy's dad was arrested a few years ago for CP.#18
I was a Chevy Astro van driver, there’s apparently a following for this. Met a fellow Chevy Astro van owner on a dating app and met for coffee. They wanted to show me their van. When I got in I realized it was gutted with only a bare mattress, toilet paper and a bucket in the back. He was living out of it and not in the glorified van lifer way. I got out promptly and went home.
Of course, not every reason to swear off someone’s home has anything to do with cleanliness. A host who rummages through your belongings without permission, makes you feel unwelcome, or ignores your personal boundaries can make a visit uncomfortable, no matter how spotless their home is.
And if you encounter something that genuinely makes you feel unsafe, you’re under no obligation to stay or accept another invitation just to be polite.

Huge spiderwebs with a spider in the corner of each room. When I alerted my cousins of the spider, my cousins looked at me like I was crazy and said the spiders eat the bugs u_u as there’s little baby roaches crawling over the dishes in the sink
Yea my brothers and I got out of there so fast and went back to my grandparents.

I went over to a guy's house once and he had, in his dining room, dozens of dog feces. It was a unique home feature that I'm personally glad I've never seen replicated in any other home I've been invited into.

The garbage piled halfway to the ceiling and the stench OMG I didn't know homes could smell so bad unless their was an unalive body in it. I had to take a shower and throw the clothes in the wash. Or it was just so gross it stuck in my nose but I swear I absorbed the stench.

Went to a guys house that had a bunch of guns and knives laid out on his table like they were on display. Which isn’t the worst because I live in the south but it was a bit weird. But we watched a movie and when I went to leave (because I just honestly wasn’t interested in anything further) he made jokes about not letting me leave and he could keep me there if he wanted and physically picked me up and tried to walk me back towards his bedroom and acted like it was a joke but I got extremely uncomfortable with the bit and was scared he was serious. Luckily I got out of there unscathed and blocked him.

It was a cat rescue and the shelters they had the cats in were fine but their house was a mess and jumping with fleas. The two kittens we took were in a tiny cage filled with their feces. And the lady had the audacity to insist she inspected our house to see if it met her standards!

Well, now I don't feel so bad about my own home. Thanks for all these comments!
My answer: When I was dating in my younger years, I saw my fair share of men's beds without sheets and one single crumpled up yellow pillow without a pillow case. You'd be appalled at how common this is/was amongst 20 to 25 year old men.#37
Might be controversial but a dog. I'm talking a massive German Shepherd that did not stop barking the entire time to the point we couldn't go to the bathroom in case we set it off.
#38
My friends husband washing the cat’s litter box in the kitchen sink, on top of dirty dishes.
#39
No hand soap/wash of any kind in the bathroom, there wasn't any in the whole house, they had kids too.
#40
Watched a family member put some meat in the microwave to defrost, but just on the glass turntable plate, not in a dish or anything. Then just left the plate in there and shut the door, not a chance he was going back to wash it. I couldn't avoid going back but that was the last time I ever ate at their house.
#41
My neighbour's dishcloth. I look after their pets when they're on holiday and have the misfortune of having to wash their cat's dishes with this dishcloth that i swear hasn't been washed or replaced in ten years, it's brown, slimy, smelly, and disintegrating. Absolutely revolting.

Twice I visited someone in a home that was mostly a static caravan in a field and the first visit showed a messy caravan but still tidy. Come the next visit eight years later - a very different story oh my. The caravan is there but messy and there was an extension added for the bathroom - a basic one by the way. I was offered tea that I barely touched because it came from unfiltered water and then there’s the smell - made me gag. It was from all the junk littered around the field.
This is in Wales by the way - someone who lived off grid and disconnected from society.#43
When they never open the windows and the damp air and ammonia smell (what even causes it?) just hit you the moment you walk in the door. I end up coughing for the rest of the day.

Used sanitary towels all over the place in the bathroom. They also had unused ones where the insides had been torn out. We are talking back in the 90s and these sanitary towels were made of a cotton wool type material.

While at university, I was invited to stay for the weekend at the parents’ house of my handsome new boyfriend. We had dinner with his mum and dad, the four of us around the table; I was doing my best to impress … and after dinner I suggested that I take the used plates back into the kitchen. “No need!” breezed my boyfriend’s mum, at which point my boyfriend and his parents (still seated) picked up their dinner plates and held them low for their roaming dogs to lick the plates ‘clean’. “Of course-“breezed the mum, “-we do put the plates in the dishwasher afterwards.”
My new relationship did not last even half that weekend.#46
Their parents were fighting hard, throwing stuffs at each other.
I was a child, just wanna go my friend's house to play. There were other kids crying. I immediately said to myself maybe other time.#47
Went to dinner at family member's house and they fixed the plates for everyone I asked them not to put peas on my plate because I hate them and was told "In this house we eat what's served" I was a grown woman I walked out.
#48
My ex kicked me out of the house (rightfully) and I didn't have anywhere to go until an old friend said I could go to her place. She wasn't there but said to let myself in. I walked in and there was trash and dirty diapers everywhere, plates of old food on the stairs and the bedrooms, trash piled ankle height through the whole place and oh God the smell. I walked out with my suitcase and told her I found somewhere else. Haven't been back since, though she invites me over every time we see each other out and about.

Met a stranger through a temp agency at a job site that didn’t quite pan out, so we hung out for the rest of the day, he started getting drunk immediately (9am) but I was driving and didn’t really mind it. We go to his house and it’s nice, clean, effort was put in to keep it that way. I was around 21 at the time and this guy was well into his 40s anyways shortly after we got there his wife came homes and started screaming at him, threatening him, threatening to call the cops, and reprimanding him for “bringing this white boy into my house” (they both were black and I’m white) he was yelling back throwing insults and threats and telling me to stay. I told her she had a lovely home and thanked her for having me over (I don’t know if she heard me she was screaming at him the whole time) and promptly left. I always thought that dude should’ve left as well because she was making it quite clear that he was not welcome there but it didn’t seem like he was listening.

At my in-laws, the the partly eaten turkey was put in the microwave overnight so it could be used for leftovers the next day. I couldn't really never go there again as long as I wanted to stay married but I was careful about what I ate.

1. Uncle had an unsecured firearm tucked under the couch in the children's playroom basement. It was a high caliber revolver, loaded. ( Most revolvers don't have safety switches, they rely on heavyish trigger pull.).
My 5 yr old little brother found it..#53
Filth with roaches and rats. Only experienced that once, thankfully.

I had a girlfriend in college where the romantic relationship didn't last long but we remained friendly. It came to pass that she asked me to feed her cats while she and her new boyfriend were away. I really liked the cats, and the new boyfriend wasn't a bad guy either so I said yes.
And letting myself into their apartment for the week is how I found out they were substance users. When I changed the litter boxes, it was clearly the first time this had been done in a while.
I was probably 20 years old so I didn't make a big deal about it, I just backed away from them. The cats appeared well fed, at least.#55
Making sandwiches by hand and licking their fingers every five seconds.

They let their pets urine and feces freely in their carpeted house. They'd pick up the big pieces here and there, but lots of it was caked into the fibres. Didn't seem to think it was weird.
#57
Tiny studio type room with a board on the window ledge for cats to come and go. There were 16 cats walking on the table, cat hair in food, cat feces on floor. One (at least one) cat had diarrhoea. Back home l had to take a shower immediately and all clothes into washing machine l stank so bad.
#58
My friend's dog and cat both up on their dining table eating leftovers off their plates while their kid was sat eating her dinner.

One of my best friends lives in a house that is literally a tip.
And he isn’t poor by any means, he is quite well off. But the house is just filthy. Boxes scattered everywhere, floor dirty because shoes aren’t being taken off.
I’m not in a rush to go back.#60
I didn't leave immediately but wanted to, all of the doors locked from the inside and only their Dad had the keys. Neighbours invited me inside because I'd lost my house keys.
We watched original star trek for a bit because that was apparently one of the show's they were allowed to watch?
Nice enough people but complete weirdos in hindsight.#61
In high school, my friend's house, they had like 5 or 6 Shar Peis. The smell, oh god the smell. I left as soon as I could and never went back.
#62
The undressed photos of his wife on every wall in the apartment. Right after he had introduced me to his wife. Awkward...

Yep I wen into a clients house and there were roaches crawling everywhere. I’ve never been more repulsed.

They had a rotten turkey from Christmas in their fridge. It was March.

I was a service professional going to someone's house for a job. I had met them before, it wasn't a one-time kind of service. This time I needed to knock on the front door to confer with the homeowners about something in the back yard. I heard a woman's voice saying "you little jerk! You're a little jerk *from hell*!!"
I went into the back yard to do my work. She came out a few minutes later and said "sorry I couldn't come to the door, I WAS CHANGING MY NEWBORN BABY'S DIAPER"
OMG. I still had to go back, though. The husband later said "don't ever get married". Yeah, not to *her*, that's for sure. -

Going through someone else’s phone is definitely an ethical and moral grey area. For many couples, it’s something they’ve always done without ever having any problems with it. For others, it’s an invasion of privacy and something that shouldn’t be normalized.
But not everyone is the same, and some people end up snooping and finding things they never expected, and no, we're not talking about questionable Instagram likes. Some stumble upon the most unhinged, unexpected things about their husbands and boyfriends that they never could have predicted. So today, we’re bringing you some examples of the baffling things women have found on their partners’ phones.

To the surprise of many people in this thread, snooping through a partner’s phone is shockingly common. According to a Pew Research Center study on digital technology and relationships, around 34% to 67% of adults, depending on the survey, admit to looking through their partner’s phone without permission at least once.
The surveys also consistently show that women are slightly more likely than men to check their partner’s phone, often citing gut instinct or a sudden change in their partner’s behavior as the reason. While this doesn’t mean snooping should be condoned, the women on this list were, for the most part, right to trust their instincts.

And these discoveries aren’t that rare, either. According to cybersecurity firms, around half of the people who snoop through their partners’ phones end up finding something they weren’t meant to see. These discoveries can range from harmless secrets to full-blown infidelity or even entire hidden digital lives.
While people used to hide their secrets in diaries tucked under mattresses or letters stashed in desk drawers, smartphones have practically become modern-day diaries. They offer a glimpse into people’s minds, revealing their fleeting thoughts, meme collections, search histories, and private interactions.

Brands need good marketing so that customers buy their products. But good marketing back in the 1950s meant something entirely different from what it does now. Whereas now we're more sensitive to different cultures, minorities, and generally things that could offend people, it seems like marketing gurus of the past didn't bother thinking about that much.
Or was it just a different time with different values and definitions of what's inappropriate? We'll let you be the judge of that as you scroll through these vintage advertisements that Bored Panda has collected from various places online. A dash of sexism, bad medical advice, and just hilariously bad ideas are what these old-timey ads have in common.

Adulting can be pretty depressing. Mondays arrive far too quickly, paychecks don’t, and the state of the world doesn’t exactly help. Sometimes, it feels like there’s very little to be optimistic about.
But every so often, you stumble across something wholesome, whether it’s a story, a video, or a meme, that makes things feel a little brighter. Sometimes, it’s just someone sharing a small win or one of life’s little moments that reminds you things aren’t all that bad. That’s what r/wholesomegreentext is all about. The community describes itself as “a community of friendly individuals who believe the best part of waking up is a wholesome meme in your cup.” So, before you doomscroll yourself into oblivion, here’s something to sip on.

#3 Anon Gets Cheated On By His Wife

Collecting “greentexts that hit your heart,” the r/wholesomegreentexts subreddit is almost a decade old. But if you’re a little “green” on what exactly a greentext is, don’t worry. I’ve got you. Greentexts are basically a unique form of storytelling that originated on the image board site 4chan in around March 2010.
The name comes from the platform’s formatting, where starting a post with a greater-than sign (>) causes the text, normally maroon, to appear in green when the post is published. Apart from the font color, what makes these posts distinctive is the style they’re typically written in.
#4 Hard And Cold

#5 Anon Don't Need Pizza

#6 Best Dad Ever

You’ll notice there are no long paragraphs here. Usually, these posts contain stories told through a series of concise, bullet-style lines, with each short line building toward a punchline, unexpected revelation, or memorable moment. These narratives “are often confessional in nature, dealing with the authors’ triumphs and tragedies alike,” as researcher Agustin IV Morado explains in his 2016 thesis.
#7 Anon Celebrates Christmas

#8 Anon Is Friends With A Cow

© Photo: Wheel-Jovial560
#9 Anon Meets Canadians

© Photo: Playful_Bunnyyy
In other words, these stories can cover just about anything, from awkward social encounters to personal struggles and unexpected victories. As Morado explains, “Given the anonymity that 4chan offers, the site offers a perfect medium for people to tell stories in which they may have done things that are unethical or perhaps illegal. Other greentext stories may be humorous, perhaps even silly, and thus not meant to be taken seriously.”
That anonymity can also help users find common ground. Morado argues that greentexts allow “anonymous 4chan users, who tend to be outsiders from mainstream society, a way to identify with each other through shared stories.”

#11 Anon Appreciates His Dad

#12 Wholesome Love From Anon

© Photo: VarietyEmotional3198
Wholesome greentext stories are especially interesting given 4chan’s reputation for largely being anything but. It helped shape today’s online culture in numerous ways, but as The New Yorker’s Kyle Chayka expressed, “4chan was where I learned that the internet could be bad.” Some have even called it “one of the Internet’s most controversial websites.” Morado, however, put it more mildly, noting its “off-color, offensive humor.”
Yet even in a corner of the internet known for its darker side, people have found stories worth sharing for an entirely different reason: they make us feel good.

#14 Anon Receives Enlightenment

#15 When Life Gives Lemons

© Photo: PurelyCharm
Perhaps that reflects something about us more broadly. As Amy Francombe wrote for The Standard, “The internet can be a hostile place. Trolls rule the comment sections, hot takes might as well be called mean takes, and we’re all one wrong post away from being cancelled.” But her 2023 article also explored a growing Gen Z appetite for wholesomeness, something she described as the “new Gen Z aspirational #mood.”
#16 Anon Gets Laid Because Of Technoblade

© Photo: Arlene_Dean
#17 Anon Loves Kebab

© Photo: Zealousideal-Self627
#18 Anon As Sharpener

© Photo: Tennille_Bowyer
One explanation may be the uncertainty many young people face. As Letty Cole, a creative strategist at MØRNING and editor of Burn After Reading, told The Standard, “Gen Z are grappling with political uncertainty, a climate emergency, and the loneliness and burnout caused by late-stage capitalism: wholesomeness is just one way to cope.” Against that backdrop, she sees the appetite for the wholesome less as a passing “mood,” and more as a “quiet form of resistance.”

With so much attention focused on what’s going wrong in the world, from global crises to 4chan edgelords, choosing to celebrate kindness, community, and the little things that make life worthwhile can be a way of pushing back—and reaching out.
#22 Anon Receives Guidance

#23 Family Is Important

And that brings us back to these greentexts. Originally shared by anons on 4chan, these stories have also found an audience on Reddit, where communities like r/wholesomegreentexts collect posts that capture the internet’s softer side. Behind those green lines of text are people sharing personal experiences and finding common ground with strangers.

While having a job provides a livelihood, the work environment can get bad. We’re talking about unreasonable management, a toxic office culture, and corporate greed that benefits no one but the people at the top.
Meanwhile, those who do all the work are left to stew in their frustration. Some have chosen to air their grievances on social media, and this page's posts are excellent examples. As you scroll, you will see why many have chosen to fight back against the system.
Here are some of the posts that stood out the most. Feel free to upvote the ones that resonated with you most.

Employee turnover is one of the costliest company outcomes, and it's mostly preventable. According to Gallup, it’s mostly because managers aren’t doing their part to keep employees.
Gallup reported that 55 percent of exiting employees said managers or the organization itself “could have done something” to keep them. One of those things is recognizing the signs that an employee is about to leave.

A manager’s job isn’t to make an employee’s work life easier. However, good managers listen and accept feedback.
Gallup’s report also found that 62% of employees are less likely to feel burned out if their manager is willing, at the very least, to listen to their work-related problems. This makes them feel heard and like their opinions matter.

It also goes without saying that a toxic work environment can lead to poor mental health. According to the World Health Organization, an estimated 12 billion workdays are lost every year because of issues related to depression and anxiety.
How much does that translate into monetary losses? Around $1 trillion per year in lost productivity.

The WHO defines work-related mental health issues as psychosocial risks. Apart from unsafe or poor physical working conditions, these risks include all forms of discrimination and exclusion, violence or bullying, lack of control over design or workload, and unclear job roles.
They also include common issues like job insecurity, inadequate pay, poor investment in career development, and conflicting home and work demands.
