While shelter life is no paradise for any animal, adoption can also come with its fair share of trauma, anxiety and fear for cats. It's a massive and overwhelming change that's not always easy for a new pet owner to navigate. Millions of cats enter shelters in the United States every single year. Sadly, some never make it out alive. According to the ASPCA, around 2.2 million cats were adopted in 2025, 362,000 were returned to their owner or the field, 376,000 were transferred to other organizations, and 277,000 were euthanized.

There are loads of reasons cats end up in shelters across the world. Some are found on the streets as strays. Others are surrendered because their owners can't afford them, are moving, or simply can't 'handle' them. The latter, say experts, is often down to a general lack of animal care education.

According to experts at Cold Nose College, cat behavioral problems, especially inappropriate urination (missing the litter box), are consistently cited as a top reason cats are relinquished. Other behavioral factors include cat-to-cat aggression, biting, and destructive scratching.

"Just like a child, animals do not learn how to be good' all on their own. They need positive guidance and to be taught how to be a well-mannered member of a family," says Cyn Demers from the Saving Grace Humane Society. "If more people had access to training classes or basics on the pet they were getting, it would lead to more cohesive households and less animals being surrendered due to their innate nature as a different species."

Adopting is often also cheaper than buying from a breeder. “Shelter cats are usually treated for parasites, examined by a vet and are very often sterilised and vaccinated before you take them home,” notes Royal Canin's team, adding that most shelters will ask for an affordable financial contribution as an adoption fee.

They suggest asking a lot of questions before deciding on the purr-fect kitty. Find out the cat's age, what its life was like before the shelter. Staff may or may not know the answer but it's worth asking anyway. Also ask if the cat is comfortable being left alone, and whether they have any unusual behavior or if there’s anything you should be aware of.

You might also want to know how the cat reacts to children and/or other animals, and whether they are used to going outside. If you do have other pets at home, you may want to ask the shelter if they can help organize a meet-and-greet.

Experts advise that you spend some time with the cat you intend to adopt, before making a final commitment. "Try to see the cat several times before adopting it and spend some time allowing it to get to know you," explains the Royal Canin site.

When it comes to bringing your newly adopted cat home, there are a few things to keep in mind. Firstly, give him or her space and a place to hide when they feel overwhelmed. The cat might not show you the immediate affection you're craving for and it's best to follow their lead by letting them come to you first. Don't smother them with love and cuddles, as hard as it may be.

"After adoption, your new cat wants a safe place to observe the scene until they’re comfortable enough to explore," reveals the team at Rover. "Make sure these spaces are pet-safe; you don’t want them getting stuck in a wall."

According to Rover's site, a cat will let you know when they're ready for all the love you have to offer. Dilated pupils, flattened ears, and a rapidly twitching tail are signs that the cat is still nervous. But if the cat starts rubbing up against you or puts out a playful paw, it's inviting you into its space.

If you’ve ever asked a pet parent to choose between you and their pet, there’s a good chance you already know how that story ends. For many people, pets aren’t “just animals”—they’re family. They’re loyal companions, emotional support systems, and the ones who stick by us through some of life’s toughest moments. Whether it’s a dog greeting you at the door after a long day or a cat curling up beside you when you need comfort most, those bonds run incredibly deep.

That’s exactly what happened in today’s story. One woman absolutely adored her two pet cats, both of whom had helped her through some of the most difficult periods of her life. So, when she got engaged, she made it clear from the very beginning that her beloved pets would be moving in with them. But not long after the couple started living together, her fiancé gave her a shocking ultimatum: she had just four days to “get rid of” one of her cats. Whether someone chooses to have a pet or not is a deeply personal decision. Just like any lifestyle choice, pet ownership comes with its own set of responsibilities, challenges, and rewards. There’s the daily feeding, grooming, vet visits, and, yes, the occasional fur-covered couch. But for millions of people around the world, the positives far outweigh the inconveniences. Research has consistently shown that pets can help reduce stress and anxiety, ease feelings of loneliness, provide unconditional love and emotional support, create a calming presence at home, and even give people a greater sense of purpose. After all, there’s something incredibly comforting about knowing that no matter what kind of day you’ve had, someone is always excited to see you walk through the front door.

Pets don’t just benefit our emotional health; they can also encourage healthier lifestyles. One study found that more than 60% of dog owners meet the recommended weekly amount of physical activity. That means they’re getting at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise every week, simply because their furry companion needs regular walks. Many owners even say their dogs motivate them to leave the house on days when they’d rather stay in bed. Those daily walks often turn into opportunities to explore parks, meet neighbors, enjoy fresh air, and build healthier routines. In many ways, dogs become the most persistent (and perhaps the cutest) personal trainers anyone could ask for.

But here’s something even more interesting. Traditionally, pets were often viewed as companions within families that already had children. They were considered an addition to the household rather than a central part of it. Today, however, researchers are noticing a significant shift. As birth rates decline in many countries and family structures continue to change, pets are increasingly taking on much larger roles in people’s lives. It’s becoming more common to hear people refer to themselves as “dog moms” or “cat dads,” and while those labels may sound playful, they reflect a genuine emotional connection. Increasingly, pets aren’t simply living alongside families; they’re becoming an essential part of what family means.

Several broader demographic changes help explain why this is happening. In many developed countries, marriage rates, fertility rates, and even household sizes have declined over the past few decades. At the same time, more people are living alone or spending longer periods of adulthood without partners or children. As a result, pets are often filling roles that might once have been occupied by spouses, siblings, or children. They become trusted companions, sources of emotional comfort, and loyal members of the household. While they certainly don’t replace human relationships entirely, they often help ease feelings of isolation and provide a level of companionship that’s difficult to put into words.

Research supports just how deeply people value these relationships. According to Psychology Today, 77% of dog and cat owners say their pet is a family member “just like anyone else”. Similarly, Pew Research found that nearly all dog owners in the United States consider their canine companions to be important members of the family. In fact, in some countries, dogs now outnumber children. That statistic alone highlights just how dramatically society’s relationship with pets has evolved. For millions of households, caring for a pet isn’t viewed as a hobby or luxury; it’s simply part of everyday family life.

Shifting family dynamics and growing social isolation have strengthened the emotional role pets play in people’s lives

Animal behavior researcher Enikő Kubinyi has spent years studying this growing bond between humans and their pets at ELTE Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest. In a paper published in Current Directions in Psychological Science, Kubinyi explores why these relationships have become so meaningful. She argues that the parent-child-like bond many people develop with their dogs is driven by both biology and culture. Humans have evolved with a natural instinct to nurture and care for others. At the same time, modern society has changed dramatically, with smaller families, fewer children, and increasing social isolation. Together, these biological instincts and cultural shifts have helped strengthen the emotional role pets now play in our lives.

Kubinyi explains this idea even further, saying, “Many people now live without close family ties or regular interaction with children. For example, in recent years, nearly 90% of adults in Hungary do not spend any time caring for young children, although our species is biologically adapted to cooperative child-rearing. Yet the psychological need to nurture and connect hasn’t disappeared.” In other words, while society has changed, our emotional wiring hasn’t. People still seek meaningful connections, opportunities to care for someone, and relationships built on trust and affection. For many, pets naturally step into that space, offering companionship without judgment and affection without conditions.

At the end of the day, pets mean different things to different people. For some, they’re loyal companions who brighten everyday life. For others, they’re emotional anchors who helped them survive grief, loneliness, anxiety, or some of life’s darkest moments. That’s why asking someone to give up a beloved pet is rarely as simple as giving away an object. It often feels more like losing a close friend or family member. While every household has to find arrangements that work for everyone, it’s also important to recognize the emotional significance pets hold in so many people’s lives. Understanding that bond is often the first step toward finding compassionate solutions.

Coming back to this particular story, it’s easy to understand why the woman felt so heartbroken. She had made it clear from the very beginning of the relationship that her two cats would always be part of the package, and her fiancé had known about them long before they moved in together. That’s why his sudden ultimatum came as such a shock. Relationships naturally involve compromise, but many people felt this demand crossed a line—especially when it involved a pet that had been part of her life for years. Others also questioned why the issue wasn’t raised more seriously before they became engaged. Pandas, what are your thoughts? 3D printing essentially involves taking a digital file and then using that info to layer various materials like plastics, composites, or bio-materials to create whatever object you want, with whatever properties you want. Size, texture, material, color, rigidity, flexibility, etc—everything is up for grabs.

The 3D printing industry is predicted to be worth a jaw-dropping $84 billion by 2029 as the technology’s capabilities continue to soar. This continued spread of 3D printing tech makes it highly likely that you and I will, eventually, interact with products, homes, buildings, toys, prosthetics, medical models and implants made with this tech.

One of the coolest things about this tech is that it completely shifts timelines. If you urgently need protective medical gear (like healthcare workers did during the pandemic) or a niche replacement part for an important piece of machinery, you can, effectively, use a 3D printer to get what you need instantly instead of waiting days, weeks, or months.

Meanwhile, companies can use this speed to iterate on prototypes and test out products incredibly quickly.

I made a large wooden one of these for my living room last year and decided making a mini one was the perfect way to learn cad.
This is my first original design: a simple, minimalist corner desktop LED lamp. It’s designed to sit neatly in a corner and cast a soft, indirect glow on the wall. The lamp uses a cheap $7 LED strip from Amazon and prints in one piece, sitting at 10inches tall.

My friends showed me a sketch their 7 year old son, Teddy, had drawn. I immediately knew I wanted to turn this zap ray into a real thing for him, while keeping and expanding on all of the different details he had envisioned in his original concept.

It is one of the most popular 3D printing communities on the internet, with a whopping 1.1 million weekly visitors and 25k weekly contributions on the subreddit.

This project has been a work in progress for the better part of 9 months, I've been slowly printing each state as I have the time. Finally added Alaska today to complete the map.
Because each one is (on average) less than 10mm thick, this whole project actually didn't use that much filament (my best estimate is 3-4kg).
The scale of Hawaii is a little larger than it should be; the iteration of files I was using had the scaling a little off and I didn't notice until it was finished printing. Haven't decided if it's worth re-printing yet.

Earlier, Bored Panda interviewed Germany-based computer vision engineer Sricharan Chiruvolu. He was kind enough to share his thoughts on 3D printing, including its applications and upsides, with our team.

He emphasized that 3D printing has affected the common consumer goods market, allowing for more personalized, custom-made items, whether you’re talking about phone cases or prosthetics.

“Also, it [3D printing] helps to bring down the production cost for a few products, giving customers more access to distinctive designs,” the expert told us earlier.

One huge upside of this technology is that it cuts the costs of creating prototypes. This way, businesses can quickly and cheaply test new products, parts, and designs.

#28 3D Printed Hobby Desk Storage Wall

Finally finished printing the last few custom parts for my hobby desk storage walls. The base pieces are the Multiboard project. Really loved the way the paint racks turned out. I think dedicated bottle holder racks that are more popular in style would have been far less versatile. I'm also really happy with the gridfinity shelf that holds my small tools that get used frequently. Much more convenient to pull the small organizer off the wall, into the desk, and use the tools right there. I was worried about the weight of the large bottles of various paint liquids on top of the drawers, but those are very solid. I think the only part I'm not in love with is that I didn't have a vision of the whole thing when I started, so it's printed in a mishmash of various blues instead of a unified color theme... Oh well, maybe v2.0

#30 The Print That Got Me A Job

I went from unemployed graduate to now working at a pretty sweet job!
As we all know job markets are pretty rough around the world especially in the UK for new grads.
So I started off offering 3D printing as a service as well as selling on Etsy to support myself.
I also help out occasionally in my local community and a local property manager needed a statue for the front of his building!
I took a 3d scan of an existing statue with my iPhone then re modelled it with nomad and fusion.
I did basic FEA of the cut blocks at the base and adjusted the infill to be a bit stronger towards the base as the total weight sits around 30-40kg of PETG (I cannot remember the exact weight now as this was 3 months ago)
Total print time was a bit over 1200 hours and took over 15 days of straight printing (very little failures or re-prints needed). The entire print was joined together with a mix of industrial glue (I think the name was CT something) plastic welder, filler, 3D pen and of course the mighty solder to help clean up some rough edges. The base half of the statue is screwed to the building as I just used Bambu slicer to add holes in all the blocks.
My total spend on material was £230ish and I was paid £1000. (Yeah I was definitely underpaid but this was my first and maybe my last time doing something this big!)
Safe to say the guy was super impressed and asked if I needed a job as to put it in his words: if you can design and print a statue, you can handle spreadsheets and talking to people.
For anyone concerned about weather or longevity. It’s covered in thick coats of paint and clear coats to finish it off.
To note: the manager did say he was quoted 3 months and £2.5k for plaster which is why he wanted a faster solution and turned to 3d printing.
To anyone really concerned about longevity, property folk don’t really care and just want the job done quick and dirty as it’s not really their concern in 10-20 years time. Hence why I was lowballed at £1k🤣

#34 My Brother And I Designed Our Own 3D-Printed Metal Watch

A few years ago, u/raceking37 and I decided to create our own digital watch. The project was inspired by a few vintage HDSP-2000 LED matrix displays that we had acquired. These displays were first introduced in the 1970s and have a really unique look, especially under a microscope (as shown in the last image). They're quite difficult to photograph with my phone, though, so they look much nicer in person than they do in these photos. The watch uses an ATTINY1616 microcontroller. The metal case of the watch is SLM 3D-printed in stainless steel.

After months of work, I'm delighted to be able to present the Mk01: a 3D-printed mid-tower PC case !
A PC case for mini ITX and micro ATX motherboards, customizable, upgradeable, with a retro futuristic, minimalist and playful design!
For ventilation and airflow, it can accommodate two 120mm fans on the front. The top and bottom are perforated for improved cooling. At the rear, you can add an 80 mm fan for extraction.
All the pc parts fit together like a jigsaw puzzle and are screwed together. The outer parts of the pc are magnetized. You can open the pc at any time, without unscrewing, change the pc’s style without reprinting the complete case, print custom parts

#39 This Is Exactly Why I Bought A Printer Two Months Ago

Finished printing a heavily modified PC case I’ve been working on and wanted to share the result here since the whole thing was printed on my Bambu P1S.

The design started from an FF04-style case, but I ended up modifying it quite a bit to fit modern hardware and my own layout ideas. It’s now housing my main gaming SFF PC, so this thing is fully functional and not just a display print. So many iterations of parts as well in the last photo lol.

Printed in Polymaker HT PLA GF, and overall I’m really happy with how clean the panels and structural parts came out. The P1S handled the job surprisingly well considering the number of large parts involved.

Honestly though, printing something this size really made me want a larger-format printer someday, especially something like a Prusa CORE One XL with the toolchanger/index system, just to avoid splitting parts so much and to experiment more with multi-material setups.

Still dialing in some finishing touches, but the case is basically done now and running daily.

#40 Fully 3D Printed Life Size Horus

5 months and 1752 individual 3d printed pieces later, I have a Horus Lupercal.
Quick stats:
Total tip top height: 14’ 5” | 4.4m
Top of Horus’s head: 11’ 9” | 3.6m
Human: 5’ 5” | 165cm
Why not paint him before assembling? This isn’t a mini 😁. A practical was the only way to see what issues will pop up, if it can even support itself, if something will break or if I need to reinforce something. Better for something to happen now, than to waste weeks painting only to find out it all falls apart.
He is missing his talon, but a combination of me not thinking through access and not enough floor height, I could not add it yet. Even the Worldbreaker is at a slightly higher level due to the pallets. It’s not flush in the arm. So I had to use cords to hold it for now.
I did have to saw a portion of his leg armor off as it was interfering with his forearm. These things I couldn’t account for in theory.
His arms and pauldrons are held in place with rods, hooks and a massive heavy duty turnbuckle. Basically the same exact set up in my space marine, but beefier.
There is no additional support in his legs. Just straight up hollow plastic.
I will have a more detailed post in the future regarding cost, filament, weight, waste and other technical details for this project.

I needed something to hang my dish cloths on, so they could dry out. At first, I thought about using tape, but then I realized that I could probably attach them with suction cups so I could easily remove them when I’m cleaning… and it worked perfectly!

The cable hides inside the charger through a cavity in the hollow stand. I had some 95A TPU that closely matched the blue silicone band, so decided to use that to make a non-slip foot!

A 2023 study published in Nature Medicine backs this up. The researchers looked at data pulled from five large studies, covering over 93,000 people spread across 16 countries, from the U.S. and Japan to China and much of Europe.

Every participant was at least 65 years old, and more than 6 in 10 were dealing with ongoing mental or physical health conditions.

What they found was pretty telling. Folks who spent time on hobbies said they felt healthier, happier, and more satisfied with life overall, and they had fewer signs of depression than those who didn’t. The pattern showed up in every country involved. 

The study can’t prove that hobbies directly caused those outcomes, but the researchers noted that they involve creativity, self-expression, and mental engagement, all of which tend to go hand in hand with feeling good.

#76 Pleased With How This One Came Out

My process is simple, using tape to set up each "line" and a palette knife to push the paint around within the set up area, then peel the tape. It's the endless repetition that is awfully long process that makes me question my own existence and everything else lol. Still, after about 2 to 4 months, I'm just in awe and glad to see these paintings before my eyes.

So TikToker Jess (@jls_1003) asked women on the platform to describe the worst ones guys have ever given them. From the way they talked to how they kept their house, here are the ways in which men instantly ruined their chances.

If we were to take a more quantitative look at the topic, we'd see that women are more familiar with "the ick" than men (63% vs. 39%) and are more likely to have experienced it (75% vs. 57%).

Experiencing the ick isn't an instant dealbreaker, but it's close. Data indicates that after experiencing the ick, 26% of people terminate the relationship immediately, while 42% end it a bit later.

That leaves 32% of people who continue the relationship despite the ick. Most do not share the experience with the person who caused it (only 28% do). However, nearly everyone shares it with someone else (92%), most often with friends (80%) or family members (50%).

Research also shows that people who are easily disgusted by things like germs, bodily fluids, etc. (i.e., have higher disgust sensitivity) seem more sensitive to specific icks. However, this doesn't necessarily mean they experience the ick more often than others, just that they might be strongly affected by certain triggers. It's like having a sensitive smoke alarm – it might go off more easily with certain types of smoke, but not necessarily with all smoke.

We also know that people with an inflated sense of self-importance and a need for admiration (i.e., grandiose narcissism) are more likely to experience the ick. However, how often they experience the ick isn't necessarily higher. This suggests they're very selective. They might only get the ick when they perceive very specific flaws that threaten their high self-opinion or their partner's perceived status, but they don't get the ick over every little thing.

When you’re young and spending time with your significant other’s family, it can be difficult to fully relax and be yourself. There’s a lot of pressure to make a good impression. So it usually falls on the older generation to help their guests feel welcome.

But one woman says she can no longer tolerate her daughter’s boyfriend at the dinner table. Reddit user w8136 explained that whenever he joins them, he grabs a full plate of food, cuts it up, pushes it around, and never takes a single bite.

Now, she wants to stop inviting him over; however, that would really upset her daughter.

People shouldn’t make themselves the center of attention at someone else’s table

If you’re invited to dine with your significant other’s family and, upon arrival, you find out that, for one reason or another, there’s not really much you can eat, ideally, you should try to avoid it becoming the main focus of the night and just keep things on the down low.

Better yet, you could prevent this from happening in the first place.

According to Olivia Pollock, etiquette and hosting expert at Evite, if you have strict dietary limitations or severe dislikes, it’s perfectly fine to remind your host at least a week before the event to give them time to plan.

A conscientious host would even ask in advance, but sometimes they are too busy, stressed, or think they already know everyone’s dietary limitations from other social gatherings.

So, when you RSVP, feel free to remind your host that you’re vegan, kosher, or allergic to nuts. You can also offer to bring your own dish if that seems appropriate.

However, the fact that the girl’s boyfriend isn’t making any adjustments and goes from one dinner to the next, expecting he can simply repeat the same routine, definitely gives the impression that he doesn’t respect the time and effort her mom puts into preparing the meals.

Young people aren’t really thinking about table manners, though

His behavior may be explained by his age, though. According to one survey, over half of Gen Zers think table etiquette is no longer relevant.

Looking more specifically, the study found that 77% of Gen Z diners didn’t care if people put their elbows on the table, and 60% couldn’t care less about how someone holds their silverware.

However, other generations aren’t as forgiving. If we look at the general population, just 32% believe table etiquette is no longer relevant.

The results revealed that other diners are, indeed, mindful of how everyone is behaving: 48% of respondents said they’re irked by loud chewing, while 37% are annoyed by someone picking food off other people’s plates without asking, and another 37% are bothered by people using their phone at the table.

Also, while 49% of the people surveyed said they wouldn’t date someone who had bad table manners, luckily for the guy in our story, his girlfriend seems to be on his side.

There is a “how the sausage is made” part of every job, but for most folks, it’s nothing interesting enough to write home (or anywhere really) about. However, hospitals are a completely different topic, a setting so laden with drama that TV writers can make tens of seasons about them.

There are often conversations (aka arguments) between MD and nurse that go unseen/unheard. Could be because we believe they are ignoring something that could cause you harm. Could be because they are asking us to do things to you that you have specifically refused or that we believe could cause harm. Could be because the doctor who you praise so much is being verbally violent towards the nurses. Could be because the doctor is trying to discharge you before you can even be home alone safely. These interactions happen every single day all day all over the country. I wish that patients knew how hard we fight sometimes to keep them safe from harm.

RN here. Hospitals are dangerous. The bugs there are super resistant to antibiotics. Get in, get out as quick as you can. And treat the staff nicely, the staff remember.

For the other diabetics - hypoglycemia is extremely dangerous in the hospital because of how thinly-spread staff are. We might only be checking in on someone once an hour, and if the patient cannot use the call light to say they’re low (or even detect that they feel low), things can turn ugly quickly. Then there’s also accounting for instances where we are giving mealtime insulin but the person does not eat everything or meal delivery is extremely delayed, doctors throwing random sliding scales at patients and hoping they work, and other significant events taking over when it’s time to give insulin.

I personally shoot to hang around 90-110 at home, but once you’re in the hospital, I’m not going to freak out over a 175. I start to personally get concerned around 200-250 depending on the situation (established insulin use? Steroids? PO status? Need for tight control?).

It's less common now that I'm working a specialized ICU but there have been many times during my career where I was giving report to the next nurse and I had to explain that there currently was no plan of care and I'm unsure why the patient is a patient.

There are sometimes when the docs have no idea what's happening.

Also how bad staffing is. We talk about how horrible nurse and PCA staffing is, but I've worked floors at hospitals that had a single mid level provider covering for all non ICU units over night. 1 NP for over 100 patients.

Choosing to stay longer when you’re already advised to be discharged puts you at risk for an unnecessary nosocomial (i.e. hospital-acquired) infection like pneumonia.

CPR isn’t a miracle life saver like on TV - you’ll still probably pass away but in agony from us cracking your ribs and shoving a tube down your throat. More people should consider DNR/DNI and comfort measures. Quality vs quantity. I’ve seen more people die with quality CPR and ACLS than survive it.

If you come into triage for a potentially nonemergent case, you will be overlooked because someone somewhere else has a real emergency. Im looking at the ones complaining of a runny nose youve had for 2 days but havent been seen in 3 hours. Go to urgent care, not the emergency room.

I work in surgery so I think the entire environment is shrouded with mystery since most people have a general anesthetic and those that don’t get enough Versed to forget their experience


I think what would shock a lot of people is exactly how many people are in that room- I think a lot of patients get it in their heads that it’ll be anesthesia, their surgeon and maybe 1-2 other people involved directly in surgery and then a nurse. If you’re in a teaching centre, service dependent- there can be 15 people in the room at times between anesthesia+learner(s), surgeon + learners (fellows, residents, assists, medical students), scrub nurse, 2+ circulators (plus orientating staff/nursing students), med device reps, service workers etc.



Also the things that happen once you’re lights out can be kinda gnarly. If your surgical site is above the neck- they’re stapling the first layer of drapes to your head and face so they don’t slide off.

We totally manhandle people when transferring and positioning but at the same time there is a lot of finesse involved and constant checking and double checking of minute details like the angle of abduction of your arms and whether or not there’s a wrinkle in the sheet you’re lying on. Those tiny things can cause you a significant injury while under anesthesia and unable to move- so we have to be very very attentive to those details on your behalf.

How much your providers Google your symptoms and then encourage you not to Google them.
How much malpractice actually happens and is covered up because you don't know the right questions to ask.
How much racism in medicine exist ESPECIALLY if you are Spanish-speaking only or a black woman.
How most times mistakes are made solely because of a providers ego and inability to take advice from the team
I could go on and on.

Your OR team is probably severely sleep deprived. I have done MANY 24 Hour shifts of straight surgery back to back because of call. Your surgeon is prob the most sleep deprived if they’re on call at the hospital and we are operating on you while you’re asleep and fully reliant on us. We’ve all become accustomed to it but it’s not safe for you or us.

There’s many medical staff who don’t wash their hands after using the bathroom. I got in a debate with a doctor bc he said hand sanitizer is fine. I asked him if he would be okay with a chef taking a dump and only using hand sanitizer making his food. He said he wouldn’t be okay with it. Make it make sense? HIPAA is also violated so much and no one seems to care?

The moments of respite makes it manageable so you can be there for your patients and their families to aid in the care team in reaching their goals of returning to either their normal or their new normal life.

Doctors make mistakes in surgical procedures all the time and nobody ever hears about it. They puncture things they chose the wrong spot for a tube, they forced something that shouldn’t have been forced, etc. either nobody else but doc knows, or most everybody knows what truly happened but for some reason we don’t admit it to patients that complications could have been avoided.

That a lot of white nurses are intimidated by black patients who allude assertiveness and know the rules , if they feel threatened by you they will put a behavioral red flag on your account., that will follow you wherever you go. White nurses and white doctors do not like people ( Black People) challenging them.

Most hospitals ignore regular scheduled cleaning of air ducts so mold grows uncontrollably and can cause hospital-acquired fungal infections due to breathing in the mold spores circulated throughout the HVAC. I know a guy who works for a commercial air duct company and he sends me pictures of the mold growth inside the units but never reveals the location. Absolutely horrendous.

In the ER you can have a patient come in for an STD check, one with a sore throat, someone for poison Ivy, someone with a stubbed toe, someone with a broken arm, someone having a heart attack or stoke, maybe they survive, maybe they don’t. You clean them up, allow family in, then you hop into a room with impatient/disrespectful family or patient, or maybe have to deal with a child immediately after. All in a 12 hr shift. AND legally document all those events so as not to lose your job/license.

Towels that are used to clean up all sorts of body fluids or patients with all sorts of illnesses (bacterial, viral, bleeding, throwing up, etc) of both alive and dead patients are bleached/sanitized then brought back as clean towels for others to use.
That thought alone, made me take my own towels when hospitalized.

I don’t work there but I was in the ER the other day and had to use a bedside commode for a urine sample and I accidentally peed on the floor, alerted the nurse and she said “ah just leave it”…. Nobody came and cleaned it up for hours, I threw paper towel down before I left and used my shoe to wipe it up but damn… no disinfectant or nothing???

The bedrails are not always throughly cleaned. I once had a patient empty his colostomy bag and dropped the container. It splattered everywhere. Housekeeping didn’t bother to clean the inside of the bedrails or the handles that let them down.

First, if they say they are tested by FDA approved laboratory, don't believe them because FDA does not approve any laboratories. Second, if they say they are third-party tested without telling you which third party, chances are they are not third-party tested because if they were, trust me, they want to put it out there. And this next one is very common.
I see it all the time. Contains clinically tested ingredients. Now keep in mind, just because an ingredient is tested does not mean it's proven to work because it can be tested and proven not to be working.

I hear so many housekeeping staff say they wanna become cnas and nurses because all they do is sit down.

Then when you see housekeeping make the transition to be cnas, they quit. Same for cnas. Older cnas be talking about how they should have become nurses and just sat all day. Then they become nurses and do the same exact thing.

Things are always greener on the other side of the pasture when you're looking at it from the outside.

Nurses are also expected to fill in roles for other departments that are "short staffed" for example: Social work, house keeping, child life, food service, formula room, bio med, security, distribution, IS, and engineering (who gets off at 2p anyway so we generally hope nothing breaks after that).

Because we are expected to fill these roles to make their staffing issues less troublesome for them, though the opposite can never be expected from these roles for a nurse. Examples, you will never see: a social worker, house keeper, child life specialist, formula room, bio-med, security, distribution, IS, or engineering giving meds, turning patients, feeding patients, ambulating with patients, bathing, or changing a patient.

The cafeteria and morgue are always close together. The floors in hospitals carry mortal bacteria and diseases. Nurses and staff track that stuff everywhere. Do what you will with that information, but don’t let your kids play on the floor and clean your shoes before you take them into your home.

There are so many things I could put, many of them not appropriate. But something that always bothers me are the amount of unnecessary “serial” labs and X-rays that are done on a daily basis (sometimes multiple times a day) and the price of all of them. SD RN x 10 years ICU RN x 5 years

You're being charged for everything we bring in that room, down to the kleenex so take it home with you. However wipe it all down & PLEASE take those damn shoes off before you get in your car. Yes car!! Housekeeping is 24/7 but a lot of them are lazy af & dont clean thoroughly. The hallways are mopped the least.

Our charge desk is at the front nursing station and I get soooo annoyed when family members walk up to me and ask for stuff. I get that I don’t seem busy because I’m sitting, but I’ve got 70 things I’m trying to do. Please use the call bell.

No, no matter how much you raise your voice at me, how hard of a tantrum you throw, it won't make some magically appear, and I'm not about to call nutritional services to bring you up just a single packet of salt. Why don't we have salt? Because a lot of patients that are on a salt-restricted diet also have the ability to walk, and if we kept it out in the open, they'd just take it, and we're in the business of helping our patients get better, not worse. Now, if you're not salt-restricted, I can show you how to order your own food, and I would suggest that you add a seasoning kit to each order, so even if you end up *not* using salt on that specific meal, you'll have some for later in case you forget to order. Make sense? I'll see you in a bit, I'm in the middle of changing a patient's sheets, and I had to stop for 5 minutes to tell you why I don't have salt in a way that'll prevent you from arguing with a nurse."

Side note #1 - As far as ratios are concerned, one of the things that I love about my unit, is that it feels like between management keeping tabs on staffing, and the physical size of our specific unit, they don't have the ability to have dangerous ratios for the nurses. We have a maximum of 20 patients spread across 12 rooms. The closest I've seen us to full capacity would be 18 patients spread across 4 nurses, with a 5th coming in later in the shift. 2 of our patients are essentially residents and have been with us for months. I do know that *if* a nurse gets assigned 5 patients, it's one of those 2. Otherwise, the most I've seen is 4 patients to a nurse. Now, there have been shifts where I'm the only CNA on the floor. Whether that's because we have a surprise need for 1:1 sitters and that leaves only 1 tech on the floor, but about 2/3 of the way through a shift, the house supervisor goes to every unit and see what their staffing needs are, to make sure that if the next shift needs an additional nurse or tech, they call someone in from the float pool or offer overtime. The house soup is usually pretty good at talking to each of the techs to make sure we're not overwhelmed as well, in case the charge nurse of the unit is too busy to keep tabs on us, and they're pretty good at getting us reinforcements if we need it.

Side note #2 - The only thing I like about our charting software is that once you get in to write a note, you literally can't do anything else. Either you're finishing the note, or you're abandoning it and typing from scratch later. Understanding this, I don't have an issue when a nurse redirects a patient to me. "Blind, can you get 22 a pitcher of water?" or "Blind, can you get 27 bed 1 a heated blanket please?" Sure, all day, every day. I also take the time to (re)educate the patient and/or family on how to use the call light, because 4 times out of 5 it's faster than someone getting up and approaching the nurses station.

We use the blankets in the OR to wipe up blood, pee, fluids on the dirty floor. And I gladly still cuddle up with the blankets knowing this.
Also we never have any of the supplies/ instruments we need to do surgery. There’s a lot of creative leeway because of that.
