Nobody’s perfect. Everyone has annoying quirks that you are often better off simply ignoring. Not just for your peace of mind, but also for the relationship. However, when you spend years together with a person, some of their habits might become unavoidable.

So when a Reddit post asked men to share the grossest things they’ve discovered about their long-term partners, many were able to contribute. From strange sandwich “recipes” to more unsettling personality traits, the answers covered a wide spectrum, too.

    #1

She likes peanut butter and mayonnaise sandwiches.

    #2

That her boundaries are concrete solid and never to be questioned and my boundaries is just me being an unreasonable vindictive a*****e.

    #3

My ex wife her new shiny toy personality.

Nothing was ever enough for her.

TikTok and insta made it so much worse. She always had to have the new it purse or hobby. After a month and thousands of dollars. Never touch it again.

She was that way with our pets.

In the end of our marriage she was that way with me.

I love my fiance so very very much. But the used balled up tissues are everywhere. I swear our apartment has added flammability from the amount of wadded up tissues just being present.

    #5

Stuffed soiled baby diapers under my couch because her fat a*s was too lazy to get up and walk 8 feet to the garbage can. I found them a month after she moved out and my house still stank.

    #6

I dated a girl that would 100% pee the bed when intoxicated. Waking up to pissed on sheets when we were both hungover was not cool. That was many years ago, and she has been sober for nearly 20 years.

    #7

Her AO3 fanfic’s reads are often weirder than any p**n I’ve ever seen on the internet.

She's an ex. But she was eating boogers. Yeah I know, we were licking each other's privates, but seeing her out of the corner of my eye, while watching a movie, picking her nose and eating that booger was a real showstopper for me.

When we have leftover pasta my wife carefully, meticulously washes her hands, then *grabs* the leftover noodles from the pot and places them into a ziplock bag, instead of using the tongs.

She says that it's because "evolution made the human hand the most efficient grasping tool."

I once asked her to use the tongs and she informed me that, "not even God could stop her from grabbing spaghetti".

My ex would order a side salad at a restaurant and when pouring the dressing on and when the small cup was empty, instead of using a fork or spoon to scrape the sides of the dressing cup onto the salad, would LICK the cup and proceed to SPIT the dressing on her salad. IN PUBLIC. At home too obviously, still disgusting, but in public!?!?! I refused to take her to any restaurant nicer than a Waffle House. 🤢.

Prob minor, but she s***s with the door open and one time even asked me to wipe her a*s when she painted her nails and didnt want to mess them up.

She defrauded her grandparents out of a degree’s worth of tuition to fund our lifestyle and lied about obtaining a degree and still benefits from it to this day in her career that doesn’t validate education. I actually only figured that out after the break up and years after the fact of us both “graduating”.

My girlfriend and I wash our towels once a week. Not great not horrible I don’t mind as long as I feel clean after I shower.

Found out my girlfriend uses her towel to dry the floor including around the toilet of any water that drips past the mat after she steps out. She then hangs it back up again to use tomorrow.

She keeps her toothbrush and toothpaste in a cup, pointed down. Said cup collects run off water and gets DISGUSTING. Like, just keep them pointed *up* in a holder that doesn't collect water.

Telling me she prefers the drunk me over the sober me.

    #21

Gave me an insane amount of c**p about cancelling a scheduled date because I had to drive my grandma back to her hometown (she was hospitalized in the city I lived and discharged for hospice). Grandma practically wanted to d*e in her home as a last request. I really liked my gf but I couldn't handle the disrespect and resentment after she told me her feelings were valid and I should have apologized for cancelling. I broke up with her the week after.

    #22

Had me help her raise her young son, and had me pay for pretty much everything for 5 years.

She inherited a lot of money from her grandmother and bounced out of her relationship. Within weeks, she bought a new car, a home, and a trip to Europe.

The worst thing is that she said unforgivable things to break off our relationship--that I never did anything for her and for her son. It was terrible. I was a dad to her son when he needed one. And, yes, I still have a relationship with him.

    #23

My ex-girlfriend removed a bloody tampon to have s*x with me, wrapped in a tissue and dropped it under the bed. I found it still laying there about a week later. Asked her why she did not put it away. She told me that I should have since I was the one who wanted to have s*x with her.

    #24

    My wife is a 10. Now I don't mean she's a 10 to me, and I love her so she's a 10. No, she's insanely f*****g hot.

I only say that to say this. This girl takes the meanest s***s you've ever seen in your life. Like I'm talking a few times a week she leaves skidmarks in the toilet that would make a long haul trucker blush. I don't even know how it's possible. She's tiny. But I never know what I'm going to see after I lift the lid. It's like Roger Clemens took a s**t in his pitching hand and threw it full force into the toilet.

Can anyone else relate? There aren't support groups for guys in my situation.

    #25

She s***s with the door open and stinks up the entire house. I’ve even complained about it but it’s so the cat can come in and watch her s**t. Seriously. We aren’t together anymore but wanted to mention.

I love her dearly so I'm not really moved to disclose her lack of toothpaste tube hygiene with a bunch of strangers.

She peels her chicken nuggets and eats the skin and then the naked nugget.

    #28

Sock, shoe, sock, shoe like a maniac.

    #29

She wanted to declaw our new kitten, and then I realized she's always been a p.o.s. and we split.

    #30

She had a blanket that she loved. She would only sleep with that blanket wherever she went. Brought it on trips and everything.

I was not a fan of it, so I had my own blanket.

One day I was being helpful and thought to wash the blanket. She scolded me about not using a regular washer due to its fragile nature. Since it’s silk or a silk like substance. It made me think of the entire time we had been together until that moment and I asked when it was last cleaned. She couldn’t give me a date and we had been together over 15 years by this point. I nearly threw up instantly.

    #31

Mine throws her toilet paper in the trash after using it. The kids do the same now. im trying to break the habit, because why??? also, so much hair everywhere all the time….

    #32

At the end of the day she takes out her single use contacts and flicks them anywhere she pleases.

    #33

It wasn’t his fault, but what came out when he got food poisoning 🤢 poor guy.. I’ve never seen stuff projectile from both ends of the body. Got on ceilings, walls.. the dog. It was bad.

    #34

Popped the staph abscess on my b**t.

Doc wasn't able to lance it, but she went in and got it immediately with no further complications. Thing kept me from sitting down properly for a week.

It was a nasty job and I am still so grateful to her. She is a saint. We're getting married :).

    #35

This ex revealed he was diagnosed sociopath so he did a bunch of disgusting things but if we’re talking sanitary disgusting… I found a pile of dirty panties in his closet. None were mine. All different sizes. A PILE. USED AND DIRTY.

    #36

    Mostly her personality.

    #37

Turns out adorable sweet ladies fart too. Farts that are so putrid and noxious that they can cause you to awaken from a d**d sleep in a state of panic.

    © Photo: That-Web5867

    #38

She’s a mess. What she calls organized makes me cringe. She is bossy. She sheds like a cat. Gives me dirty looks when I eat. Farts like a buffalo. She’s a great mom. Hard worker. Supports me and all my weirdness. She covers every flaw I have and I cover hers. Together we make one hell of a human.

    #39

    How f*****g mean she is.

    #40

I tried to look past a lot of things. Her messy clothes, messy car, messy room. She rarely had to wash a dish, vacuum a floor, or do a load of laundry while we were together. I had it covered, at least for a while.

Though the straw that broke the camel's back was her hygiene. Never showered or brushed her teeth. It was physically repulsive. I can't make love to someone like that. The subtle hints didn't work. She'd just get b******t.

I really tried to make it work but I can't live my life perpetually exhausted and disgusted by someone.

    #41

    The hair ends up EVERYWHERE.

    #42

She never deletes the old alarms set on her phone, just makes a new one. There's so many now it's too big a job to correct.

    #43

My ex is leaving in less than 10 days. Went through the process to evict her, and her man-child. Personally, I believe a home should be clean and presentable, organized, and things put away. Yes I give room for “lived in,” because that’s normal. After I sold my home and bought the one we just moved in to, I realized more and more it was just a constant stream of boundary violations from her, and her man-child:

    1) Cleanliness. Great example of that, is I asked for things not to be thrown, dropped, and left on stairwells. It’s a safety hazard. It’s also very demoralizing because it shows that, “this is what I think of you, you are to clean up after me.” After I explained to her why it’s rude to expect someone else to clean up after you with this regard, she burst out laughing. Wherever she went in the house, a trail of trash, dishes, empty Amazon packages, medication bottles, insulin pens and much more would follow. And remain. And grow.

    2) Responsibility. Her man-child has no job, no license, no desire to improve or contribute. It’s hard to get him to lend help to actually “do” anything in regards to upkeep of the home, or projects. When she told me, “if he doesn’t want to drive, he doesn’t have to. We will figure it out.” The phrase “we” turns out she was dumping responsibility on me 90% of the time, if not more. In this regard, it was to mean I would have to chauffeur him to and from a job, if he ever got one. After two months of “job searching,” I offered to check his indeed profile (and subsequently his email account), to see how I could help him. Quickly discovered he was in fact, not looking. Zero applications or saves on Indeed. No email receipts of applied for jobs. But boy, could he tell me what the latest patch notes were in WoW Classic at the drop of a hat.

    3) Finances. She told me upfront in saying she made $100-150k. Great! I was mid range of those two numbers. She was in fact, not making that much and had $40k in credit card debt alone. She was expecting me to pay off her pre-relationship debts with the sale of my home that I had owned well before I ever met her.

More and more things registered for me this year after the move when she couldn’t disguise her lies anymore and I’d be doing 90-95% of the cleaning, the driving, paying for 100% of the groceries…

I’m sure when they vacate, I’ll find a pile of moldy wash cloths in the shower, as she just drops them on the floor.

Freedom is coming soon, and I’m excited for the next chapter in my life.

    #44

For years i refused to enter my gfs car. On the outside it was horrible abd what little inside I could see was aweful. Finally, I had to get her to drive me somewhere and I entered something far worse then I expected. It was a science experiment of rotting Starbucks coffees, makeup residue, and makeup fingerprints on everything she touched.

I was shocked since she would complain if I left a single hair in the shower/sink. Yet m, she enters this rotting coprse of a vehicle.

    #45

She’ll take out condiments to use and then either leave them out in random places in the house or put them on the deeper shelf in the back of the fridge.

Put them in the door like a gentleman! She’s an animal! Where is my ranch woman! Where’s my mustard! I’m disgusted.

Buying ranch dressing and then not knowing where the hell it is is the 7th level of hell.

    #46

One of my exes would use the packet ranch dressing mix to make an entire huge bowl of ranch dressing, then sit down with a bag of carrots and eat the entire bowl. Thinking about it still makes me gag.

    #47

She has 3 cats and they're not super house trained. One was a barn cat first, and that one and the youngest aren't spayed, so when the third older cat got introduced it became a free for all of territory p**s wars.

We never spent much time at her house for years and I found out she had been airing out the house before I came over every time. I lost power at my house and she offered to let me stay at her house for a few days to have hot showers and such.

I found a half inch of standing urine under the elements of her stove. A pile of clothes that was virtually drenched. I had always given her shkt for not cleaning the litter box which was what I assumed smelled. Nope it was the whole house. We live together now and I clean all the cat messes, because that's the only way we can live together.

    #48

My ex used to wipe his personal emissions on his side of the bare mattress and box spring. I never noticed. We used to make our bed together and he would always take care of his side and put the clean fitted sheet over the layers of crust... I didn't notice until I was making the bed alone one day and I was horrified.

    #49

(Now ex) never washed his hands even after using the toilet... took a few trips to the dr before realising he was the problem.

    #50

Picked something out of his teeth and wiped it on my blanket.

    #51

Ghosted while I was undergoing treatment for the cervical cancer he gave me after lying about his STI status. He was cheating, a lot. We'd been together for three years.

ETA: The ghosting during cancer treatment was the "most disgusting" part, not the STI status thing. That part is horrible etiquette for anybody s******y active, you should always be safe, get tested regularly and be completely honest with partners, but it is not inherently "disgusting" to get an STI. Stigma around that is dangerous for everyone, so I wanted to be explicitly clear and not add to any shame around it.

    #52

After seven years, I found out she actually loves me? The f**k?

    © Photo: ProfessorSmooth7135

    #53

That she farts and poops I guess? But my farts and poops are way worse. Go figure.

I honestly love my wife so much, that nothing disgusts me about her. I wish I was just being cheesy, but that’s just how I feel.

    © Photo: Dezmanispassionfruit

    #54

She takes off her underwear WITH her jeans / leggings. I do all of the laundry (and she cooks), but having to pull her underwear out from her jeans every time she takes off a pair adds 2-3 minutes every load! ANNOYING .

    © Photo: Sealky

    #55

That her hair would destroy our vacuum without regular disassembly and clean out.

We now have 3 hair monsters so it ends up to be a basketball size hairball each time.

At least she is a good sport about the "Trophy" photos I send her.

    © Photo: Best-Company2665

    #56

She never uses the shift key when she types. She turns the caps lock off and on with each capital letter.

    #57

I always new that she had dozens upon dozens of tabs open at once. But one time I saw her minimize down to the desktop. Good god. The had thousands of things saved to her desktop. Did you know that once you fill up the desktop, things start stacking on top of each other? Her whole desktop was huge stacks of icons, none of it in any sort of order whatsoever. She has a folder called "To sort" and in that folder is hundreds of random files, including another nested "to sort" file with more s**t in it. Presumably there are more "to sort" files as you go deeper. I don't know how deep it goes, and frankly, I don't want to know.

    #58

I have been with my wife since 2001. I recently learned that she doesn't use the gmail app. She just ... goes to gmail.com and manually logs on using her phone's internet browser.

    #59

We'd been together for 3 years, but I'd never actually seen her naked. Every time we were intimate, she'd insist on turning off the lights. Finally one day, I got a little impatient and asked what was it going to take for me to actually see her without her clothes on, and she told me "I need about tree fiddy." It was about that time I noticed my "girlfriend" was actually about 8 stories tall and was a crustacean from the Plethazoic Era! Absolutely disgusting.

    #60

She put the toilet paper under the roll. Had to go.

    #61

The little hairballs all over my shower walls.

    #62

My wife would probably say the time we were messing about and I licked her eyeball. The honest to god ball.

It was indescribably smooth. Like, it made glass feel like 36 grit sandpaper.

Edit: No it wasn't painful at all. The taste was just a mild salty flavour.

    #63

    Milk before cereal.

    #64

She genuinely loves me, which means she has bad taste...idiot!

No matter where you come from or where you’re going, what unites all of us is the embarrassment we have felt—at some point in our lives—of getting a disastrous haircut. Whether at your own hands or those of a misguided stylist, some hairdos are not meant to see the light of day.

However, the ‘Just [Eff] My [Stuff] Up’ online community thinks differently. It invites everyone to share the very worst haircuts “from all walks of life,” and the results are both hilarious and painful to look at. We’ve collected our favorite cringey hairdos to share with you. If you have ever regretted getting a haircut before, this is the post for you.

Looking good feels awesome. We don’t know about you, but we feel fresh, fine, and confident when we look good. A new hairdo or outfit can do wonders for your self-esteem. But unfortunately, we can’t always control how our hair will look. If you don’t have a trusted stylist whom you’ve been going to for years (or sometimes literal decades!), it can be tough to build that relationship from scratch.

No matter who your stylist is, what you—the client—must bring to the table is good communication. The best thing you can do is help them understand what it is that you want, and they can then give you their professional opinion.

The fact of the matter is that unless your hairstylist has known you for years or can literally read minds, there will probably be a disconnect between a few things. Namely, between what you want, what they think you want, and what they can realistically achieve with their skills.

So, the more detailed you are about the hairdo you want, the better for you and them. Don’t just describe what you want, but actually show your stylist or barber photos of the hairstyle you want to rock!

These professionals are working with something incredibly visual, and your words might not always be enough to get your ideas through. What’s more, words can be misinterpreted. Photos, meanwhile, are very clear.

“Start with showing the length you want, and find pictures of looks you could see yourself loving. Don't be afraid to be detailed and specific—hair stylists won't be offended, and actually prefer it,” Southern Living suggests.

However, you can’t ignore the fact that not every stylist will be able to turn your vision into reality. The fact is that some professionals, though they earn a living, do not have the skills for every single hairdo project. A humble, grounded pro will let you know what they are comfortable doing and what is beyond their skills. Meanwhile, someone with an out-of-control ego or something to prove might take on a task beyond their league.

Furthermore, a real pro knows which hairstyles work with which hair types and face shapes. You might have a fantastic idea for something really awesome, but it might not be the best look for you. Sure, the client is always right, but genuinely good stylists will offer their professional opinions about what you might want to consider doing. You can stick to your original vision and ignore their advice, but sometimes, the right thing to do is to amend your idea for something that’s more personalized.

“Photos work better than words, but you must be considerate of your own natural texture, thickness, and styling habits. These will affect how closely your stylist is able to match the photos, so aim to bring something realistic while still aspirational. When in doubt, you can ask your stylist to recommend specific tweaks to your inspiration that will suit your hair type better,” Southern Living writes.

You have to be honest with yourself about your own skills, too.

The Fade Club warns that you probably don’t want to do your own fade at home, as it is a technical style that is hard to master. And online tutorials won’t give you the skills that take a long time—sometimes literal years—to hone. The last thing you want is for your “cost-saving experiment” to end up in an “emergency barbershop visit to fix it.”

Meanwhile, the hair salon stresses that nobody should blindly copy haircuts they see online. You have to consider whether the cut suits your face shape.

“A haircut that looks great on someone with a chiseled jawline and high cheekbones might not have the same impact on a round or oblong face. Your face shape influences how your haircut frames your features. Not taking this into account can throw off the balance of your look, making your face appear too long, too wide, or even asymmetrical.”

Other things to keep in mind include getting regular haircuts to maintain your dashing good looks, using the right hair products, and actually washing your hair before your appointment at the hair salon. Furthermore, you have to choose the right stylist or barber for your hair type.

“Not every barber has experience with every hair type or style. Curly, textured, straight, fine, or thick hair all require different techniques and tools. Some barbers specialize in fades and modern styles, while others excel in classic scissor cuts. Going to a barber who isn’t experienced with your hair type can lead to uneven results, poor shaping, or cuts that don’t suit your natural growth pattern,” The Fade Club suggests.

During an earlier interview with a professional barber from the UK, Bored Panda dove deep into the line between good and bad haircuts.

“The main difference between avant-garde and plain bad for a haircut is the focus on details and the whole idea behind the haircut. You would think that haircuts like the bowl cut are never gonna be trendy. Wrong. It’s happening and thanks to extremely talented hairstylists, we see a lot of hipsters rocking a very fashionable bowl,” barber Giuliano Dore told our team earlier.

According to the barber, quality lies in the pattern, symmetry, and sometimes even controlled asymmetry. “If I see patchy haircuts, holes, or broken hairlines, I am gonna assume the worst,” Dore said.

He also shared some advice for cutting your own hair at home. “If you want to cut your own hair at home, go with a safe option. Same-level buzz cuts are a safe choice.”

“Home is not the place for challenging haircuts. For example, attempting a 0 to 2 high skin fade by yourself is not gonna work. Even professional barbers don’t do it themselves,” the barber told Bored Panda earlier.

“Being able to cut just based on the reflection of a mirror takes a whole new level of 4D chess and not everyone is ready for the challenge. I would also avoid sharp tools like razor blades. It’s absolutely possible to rock a very decent hairline without using razor blades at home. Clippers are your friends.”

This mass of internet users garners a whopping 7k contributions every single week.

The moderators who keep the group running emphasize that the goal of this community is comedy, not hate. Everyone is invited to gently laugh at people’s poor hairstyle choices, not poke fun at the individuals themselves. We often get the urge to laugh at the worst possible moment — a funeral, a hospital waiting room, or the middle of a very serious conversation.

Don’t worry, you are not alone, and you are not a monster.

Recently, netizens shared moments when they laughed only to realize later it wasn’t a joke. The responses are funny as well as mortifying.

One person giggled when a colleague said his car was on fire, and it genuinely was. Another burst out laughing when a friend mentioned their grandmother choked on a banana and passed away. Most said the regret hit almost immediately. But by then, the chuckle had already escaped.

These aren’t wicked or evil laughs. Just a human reflex — and there’s a surprisingly fascinating reason why your brain does it.

Keep reading to find out about it.

I was chatting with an elderly security guard at the movies and he was talking about having a degree he never used. He said "now, I only use it to decorate my bedroom wall." I laughed and he said " you laugh now, I laugh about it sometimes, but I cry most of the time".

I was taking a cave tour in West Virginia and at one point the tour guide said "Scientists believe that these markings on the rocks were made by erosion from rainfall over time. But WE know that it was actually created by the waters from Noah's flood." I laughed unpleasantly and involuntarily, and the guide glared at me for the rest of the trip.

This happened to me a few days ago. I received a private facebook message of what I can only call word soup. It was seemingly random, but just barely cohesive enough to make sense at times.. like really riding that uncanny valley.

I assumed it was some sort of bot that used markov chains (like /r/subredditsimulator) from scraping posts on my friends list because it had references to things, places and people I knew and even posted photos from people's albums.

So, I screenshotted it and posted it because it was legitimately hilarious. I mean it had such winners as "IF your her love you have to prove all others are inferior to you in bed, with Jill."

I was like, "Hey everyone, check out the weird ramblings of this bot!"

An hour or so later, I got a message from another friend that explained that this was actually an old mutual friend from high school who had suffered a psychotic break and was schizophrenic. Sometimes he goes off his meds, or his family doesn't keep an eye on him and he makes tons of facebook accounts and messages this s**t to people. They'd been getting them for years, and I must have fallen into his crosshairs.

Suddenly it wasn't so funny anymore and was rather tragic. I deleted the post and continued to block the next 6-7 aliases that kept sending stuff like that all night. Went from hilarious, to sad, to alarming in the span of a few hours.

This bizarre malfunction is officially called nervous laughter, or dimorphous expression.

It’s when one emotion, like fear or grief, produces the outward expression of its opposite.

When a situation gets too dark or uncomfortable, your brain panics and searches for an escape hatch. Inappropriate laughter then works as a psychological shield.

A 2015 study from Yale University found that our brains use “incongruous expressions,” such as crying when happy or laughing when terrified, to restore balance.

When you are hit with an overwhelming wave of negative emotion, your brain forces out a positive one to stop you from having a complete meltdown.

I have a slight hearing problem, which has led to several awkward faux pas situations. The worst one was when I was a cashier at Walgreens.

A woman came up to pay and I asked how she was doing and she replied with a sigh and a "Oh I just found out..." I couldn't hear the second part so I asked her to repeat. I still couldn't hear the second part and I didn't want to make her keep repeating, but her delivery sounded like a dry joke so I just politely laughed.

She gave me the dirtiest look and said "What's so funny about my husband having cancer?"

I definitely heard her that time.

Please keep in mind, I was, like, 11.

Back when I lived in a a foster group home, me and some of the older guys were playing on the Xbox. One of my foster brothers stopped and started making funny faces at me. He was a chill guy and we got along well and joked together, so I laughed and made faces back.

    He was having a seizure.

The most striking evidence for nervous laughter came from a very unsettling experiment done in the 1960s.

During the study, researchers asked participants to administer electric shocks to strangers, with shocks increasing from 15 to 450 volts.

The strangers were actually actors who weren’t really being shocked — but the participants didn’t know that. Most of the participants, as expected, showed signs of distress.

But some also laughed when they heard screams, and the nervous laughter increased as the voltage went up. While the chuckles may have come across as rude, these participants clearly felt distressed when administering what they thought were painful punishments.

I work at a nonprofit. My boss needed to fill a position, so he sent me to a job fair to collect some resumes. I found "Kevin", a young guy full of energy and enthusiasm with over a decade of fundraising experience.

Me: So, when is Kevin starting?

Boss: Actually, I hired someone else.

Me: Hahah! Seriously, when is Kevin starting?

But it wasn't a joke. Boss hired a dimwitted, sleepy old guy with no discernible skills. I guess he felt they had more in common. Three years later, the old guy got fired for never actually finishing a single project.

Inappropriate laughter, as uncomfortable as it can be, plays an important role in overall emotional regulation.

“When we laugh at a good joke or a comic routine, we tend to feel more relaxed afterward. Nervous laughter serves a similar function, allowing the individual to discharge anxiety and relax a bit,” says clinical psychologist Joe Nowinski.

Studies also show that laughter activates the endorphin system in the brain, the same receptors that are activated when using drugs like heroin. It literally produces pain-numbing and mild euphoria effects.

I was at a pirate themed costume party and a woman was dressed as the coin from the first Pirates of the Caribbean. The costume was pretty big, you could only see her head and legs, so I shouted across the room 'hey it looks like you have no arms' to which she replied that she didn't. I laughed it off thinking she was joking...nope...she literally had no arms. I've never been more mortified in my life.

One time I walked into my school and I looked at my friend who was very upset and said "what happened? Your cat pass away?" (It's an Italian saying) and he said "no, my mom did"

I laughed for a while because he was one to make those type of jokes, little did I know..

    © Photo: pabloheadasso

Neuroscientist V.S. Ramachandran, in his research, explained that laughter first appeared in our history to tell those around us that whatever made us laugh wasn’t a threat.

Think about the last time a friend tripped and hit the floor. Your first move was probably to laugh. Not because you’re cruel. But because your brain ran the math instantly: they’re moving, no blood, no broken bones.

This is also why, when a toddler takes a tumble and looks up with that wobbling lip, a parent’s instinct (after making sure they’re alright) is often to smile or laugh before the child has even decided how to react.

“Perhaps laughter serves a self-regulation function. That is, it is ordinarily associated with happiness and may help to down-regulate the nervousness. Or perhaps, laughter in combination with nervousness suggests to other people around the person that they too should help down-regulate that nervousness,” says Margaret Clark, professor of psychology at Yale University.

I used to have lunch with this guy I worked with. We became really good friends. All of a sudden he stopped coming to my office. I asked him why and he told me it was "Because I think you have a crush on me and you make me very uncomfortable". I am also a Guy who is 12 years younger then him. He is very ugly and has cerebralpalsy. I laughed then I realized he was serious. He has an extremely jealous wife who put all these weird thoughts in his head. As soon as I realized he wasn't joking I said "Do you realize how ugly you are?". I was in shock and it just came out. I felt really bad.

I was pretty ignorant in high school, and our friend group was one that would bust each other all the time without many boundaries. A friend was telling us about how his father died of breast cancer at the lunch table. I thought he was messing with me so I kept laughing, telling him to quit his b******t. Me being a f*****g dumb teenager assumed only women could get breast cancer, and just rolled my eyes when he kept saying it was true. This proceeded for the entire lunch period.

It wasn't until after lunch period was over and someone else came up to me and confirmed the fact that I realized what a gigantic a*****e I had just been.

Going to middle school and needing to make a phonecall home (before I had a cell phone) from the office, the secretary said, "It'll cost you 50 cents."

    I laughed. She didn't.

That was the moment I realized that despite being a good kid, adults suddenly wouldn't like or trust me simply because I was in middle school. It was jarring.

    © Photo: youre13andstupid

Some people also build a habit out of it. Every tense moment and awkward silence can be met with a chuckle. They’ve learned, usually without realizing it, to use humor as armor.

It’s called a defense mechanism — an unconscious strategy that helps us cope with anxiety, stress, and emotions that feel too large to sit with.

The cruel irony is that the more uncomfortable you feel, the more you laugh; the more you laugh, the more uncomfortable everyone else gets.

I was chatting with a future tinder date and he was an actor. I asked him how he got into it.

"I broke my leg while being the quarterback in high school and tried out for the musical and got the leading role."

    "Haha nice what really happened?"

    "That's what really happened."

I don't think I've ever met someone who had quite as wholesome of a life as he did.

    #18

2 years ago today, I was getting the kids ready to go to a local water park. My husband was taking out the trash. His phone rang. I answered, his mom(who was supposed to be meeting us at the water park) said she needed to talk to my husband immediatly. He walked in the door at that moment. I handed him the phone.

A minute goes by and he says, "I'll be right there." and drops his phone on the table.

He looked at the cieling and said "My sister is d**d."

I was thinking he meant like, she got in trouble in the "OMG my parents are going to k**l me" type way, since he said it so calmly, so I grinned at him and said "What did she do?"

    Then he said "She ove***sed.".

Many experts advise against suppressing this emotional response whenever possible. They believe that laughter, in general, helps calm us and signals submissiveness to those we are interacting with.

But when it becomes a cause of distress, experts say what helps is working on the underlying anxiety — the fuel — rather than the laugh itself. “People who feel that they suffer from frequent social anxiety can benefit from practicing strategies such as mindfulness meditation,” suggests psychologist Joe Nowinski.

When I was a high school freshman, there was a girl in my class who said "I have never kissed a boy and wouldn't unless we're married because I don't want to get pregnant from the kiss."
I immediately laughed, until I saw her confused look and realized she's being serious.

That was the first time I truly thought the US education system has failed us.

    #21

"You can't wear ponchos on campus anymore because we've decided it could possibly be offensive to...someone" at a Student Union meeting.

It was the pause before someone, the entire lecture theatre took it as a funny joke about political correctness. She was deadly serious.

Those who laughed at a car crash, a terminal diagnosis, or a colleague’s genuine distress are not all terrible people. It’s because their brain, under pressure, reached for the only exit it could find.

The next time nervous laughter catches up to you, you might not be able to stop it. But you’ll know exactly what it was, why it happened, and that you’re not alone in this.

Ok. So I was at my best friends high school Grad party at his house, and he invited some of his other friends not from our school to come too. I always goofed around in high school and today felt like any other day.

This kid, who was nicknamed 'Beateys' and I were getting along fine when I noticed some type of string hanging from his waistbelt. I couldn't really make out what it was so I assumed it was a tag to his clothes or something similar. Being an immature, unaware high schooler, I thought nothing of the context of where we were, or thinking anything would be inappropriate for me to crack a remark or joke. I took his string and started tugging on it and even asked 'Lol what is this, your stupid inflatable pants?"

He looked down and didnt give the reaction I was hoping & he turned & said "No, j*****s, it's actually my insulin pump." Which is where I found out his name wasn't Beateys, it was 'Betes. Y'know, short for Diabetes.

I was a preteen at bible camp and one of the leaders was sharing the story of his upbringing. It got real intense and he ended that intense part of the story with "And now my brother is an alcoholic!" His tone and the timing was rather comedic and I thought he was doing that to break some tension and without thinking anything else of it, I let out a huge, organic "HA!". Everyone turned to look at me. I tried to fake a coughing fit to play it off. Don't think it was very convincing.

At college orientation, my group was told that we were going to see an improv show later in the day. When we got there, it was one of those acting troupes that does shows about alcohol poisoning and date r**e and stuff like that. We all kind of tried to politely laugh through the show because we felt bad that it wasn't funny (or even well done) and we were under the pretense that it was comedy. We totally got yelled at, but at least one guy pointed out that we were just trying to be nice to a group that we were told were comedians.

(This one's a doosey.) My ex's brother's ex-girlfriend. Everything that came out of her mouth was serious. I laughed every time.

*Looks at CD Case* "Made in Mexico? But they're a third-world country, how do they have CD technology?"

Ex's Brother to me while the four of us were at the fair. They split off from us but he came back first, "So she said you're very mature for your age." I laughed. I was older than her. She didn't know this. He continued, "When I explained you were actually older she went quiet. I don't know where she is." She came back after a palm reading thinking she got an age increase...I laughed again and she was d**d serious.

"Aren't ants just baby wasps? I mean they look similar!"

"No Hawaii is in Cuba. It's not in the US."

"Cats are always female and dogs are always male because they're the same animal! S****l dymorphism!!" (She learned that phrase and used it for three weeks straight...)

Edit: Remembered one. "Horses have teeth?!".

"We just got a call that the church messed up and the wedding isn't at 11 am anymore..."

Two days before my sister in laws wedding. I started hysterical laughing. "Can you imagine?!"

I didn't need to imagine because the family was living it.

Ex-wife and I had been fighting for many months. I'd been sleeping on the couch. But I was staying there for the sake of the kids. One day she came home and she sits me down at the kitchen table and tells me the bad news, "You have to move out. I have a boyfriend now, and he's kind of jealous. He doesn't like the idea of you living here with me." I actually burst out laughing at the irony.

Wasn't laughing too hard, though, when I had to pack up my things and kiss my kids goodbye. They saw my bags by the door and said, "When are you coming back, daddy?" They were legit terrified they would never see me again. All I could say was, "I'll see you soon..." At that point I didn't even know where I was going to live.

Choose your partner wisely. Take all the time in the world to get to know them. Avoid this experience if you can.

I was shadowing at a high school and one of my stops was a Latin class. The teacher introduced himself but I couldn't understand him so I laughed and said I couldn't speak Latin. He actually just had a surprisingly thick British accent.

Years ago, a coworker told me never to drink water from a pond with a beaver dam because I could get Beaver Fever. I laughed. He informed me that it's a real thing and his dad died of it (Giardia). I felt SO BAD.

Watching HBO - the national TV premiere of some movie made by universal pictures - pre-torrenting in my family - no one had seen this movie yet. Universal pictures logo appears (cue universal writing over lovely image of the earth)

Sis: I've seen this movie before.

Mum and I: mild laughter, thinking that's not a bad joke

Sis: no really I'm sure I've seen this before.
    Mum and I: hysterical laughter.

At an eating disorder clinic in the weekly meeting the staff told us that the neighbours had complained that their cats were vomiting - they thought we were feeding them or something. I was snickering because it sounded to me like they thought we were contagious.

The other day I read about a guy who plays games on steam with his mouth and he is paralyzed from the neck down. Little did I know, it was not a troll and he actually is paralyzed. Felt really bad after that.

Last year when a couple of veterinary students, myself included, were having lunch.

I lose track of a conversation while on my phone and only heard the back end where a friend started listing symptoms.

Jokingly, I suggested they test the dog for Addison's disease. She was talking about her moms chemo side effects.

When I was in high school, I worked at a video store. One night when I wasn't on-shift, I went in to rent a movie. As soon as I entered, the manager dragged me outside and demanded to know if I'd left a bottle of p**s in the office. He was the kind of guy who'd say/do thing to s***w with people, so I started laughing. Fortunately, he didn't take that as a sign of guilt, and pointed out that if he'd been screwing around, he would have asked in front of everyone. I quickly stopped laughing. Turned out it was another employee's way of giving notice.

    Dad Bods

I thought it was a parody of the 'real women have curves' movement. Then when I found out women *really* are all about the dad bod, I cried over all the hours I wasted in the gym trying to look good.

I was chatting with a friend in his car, waiting around, when he tells me he has to do laundry. Small talk, you know? He adds "I've been meaning to do it for 2 weeks! I haven't had clean clothes since. Even underwear!". I start smiling, because who would share that? BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE! He follows by stating "I just turn my boxers like, upside down"

Now I start really laughing, and he keeps going and asks me "you've never done that??" with a concerned look.

I just said nope and lit a cigarette, staring away...

Bonus: his car was absolutely filthy, wrappings everwhere, soda cans, and a half finished sandwich from a few days prior. Should have seen it coming.

    #42

Not me, but a friend once laughed at my other friend's mother telling us their dog died.

    #43

I really wish I was earlier to this as my comment is gonna be buried, but one time I was complaining about some tough test or something to my roommate, and he said, "Oh, that s***s, but my insurance doesn't cover I care" and I burst out laughing thinking he had just invented a line on par with or better than "would you like some cheese with that whine?" and he stared at me blankly and said "Why do you find the fact that I can't get new glasses so funny?".

    #44

A girl invited me to her dorm room once. I assumed she just wanted to hang out. Then she asked me if I wanted to have s*x and I laughed, thinking it was a joke. Nope, she was serious.

Note: I laughed because I'd been crushing on her for a bit, but didn't think I actually had a chance with her.

    #45

I was talking to my mom's friend and she told me dinosaurs didn't exist and the evolution is a myth and I started laughing at her.

    #46

This one is embarrassing. I'm so sorry. I was talking to a friend who was a car dealer (high end cars) and a woman came into the showroom, nearly in tears. He asked if he could help her, and she said she had just come from (other high end car dealer) to buy a new car and they told her to come back with her husband. I laughed out loud and they both looked at me in horror. I had no idea this was a thing: It was 2012, not 1940, for cryin' out loud. (Even in 1940, it would have been rude, and poor business practice, BTW) He immediately treated her like a customer, and sold her a great car.

    #47

    "Is Maths related to Science?".

    #48

Somewhat relevant. I went to the Iowa State fair last year with a girl I had met on tinder. We ran into a friend of hers and she introduced us.

She was carrying a bucket of tiny chocolate chip cookies, and a little bit of chocolate had smeared on her chin. When I pointed it out to her and told her, she turned bright red and said, "it's just a mole.".

    #49

I always have a nervous laugh for any situations to the point I tell ppl about this quirk as a precaution. A friend of mine I havent seen in a while, was recently diagnosed with cancer and was prepping for chemo. I had no idea that she was diagnosed since I was out traveling when she decided to tell ppl about her illness.
She drasticly cut her hair so when I saw her again I complimented her on the bold fashion change when she realized I had no idea was going on and told me.
My friend is a joker so I thought she was joking and laughed it off, she kept insisting she was serious and I told her "Having Cancer is not funny, please tell me its a lie."

Good thing she was a good sport about it, I was laughing then nervously chuckling as she was telling me her situation. Had to tell her sorry if I laughed, my stupid personality has no idea how to handle sad news. She just told me to give her a good hug.

For some reason, my brain immediately short-circuited and I thought of a *Bugs Bunny* cartoon...Daffy Duck getting shot in the face, his duck-bill landing some few feet away...

I laughed. The girl looked at me in horror. I tried to explain. I failed.

A disabled guy at my university walked like he was a slapstick comedian doing a bit on funny walks.

I didn't know him or have any classes with him. (It's a very large university.) I'd see him every few weeks, walking outdoors, and -- again and again -- I'd think it was somebody *trying* to make people laugh, and so I would.

After a year or so I finally remembered that he existed and that that his walk was not meant to be hilarious.

Being a teacher is not easy. You have to wrangle a full classroom of students all day long, handle pressure from parents and the admins, and actually teach those young minds something in the process. Sadly, many teachers face terrible working conditions. In fact, according to one Australian survey, 80% of teachers experience bullying and harassment from students and parents.

Not every parent is a bully, but some say and do such out-of-pocket things that they need to be kept for posterity. Last year, teacher and creator @AmyThingGoes asked fellow teachers to share the most outrageous things parents have messaged them. And the teachers delivered: from ridiculous demands, entitled behavior, and straight-up disrespect, these parents did more than just make the teachers raise their eyebrows.

We’ve seen our fair share of mothers-in-law behaving badly at weddings. But the following story is the stuff that horror films are made from…

A rehearsal dinner turned into a nightmare when the groom’s mom took a sick joke a bit too far. She had matching t-shirts made for about ten of her relatives. While it may sound cute, it was anything but. The crazy MIL and her entourage burst into the dinner shrieking, and wearing their ‘Bride of Chucky’ tops. While the couple and their guests were horrified, the woman claims it was all in the name of fun.

We’ve heard our fair share of wedding horror stories but this one takes the cake…

How to deal with badly behaved wedding guests, according to experts

The worst wedding guests come in all shapes and sizes. Maybe they’re friends, parents, in-laws or even members of the wedding party. Many experts have seen it all, and they say there are ways to pre-empt drama or deal with it on the day without losing your sanity.

One of the most common problems is the drunk guest. Aka the one who becomes besties with the bar and doesn’t know when to call it quits. If you know beforehand that this person might misbehave when under the influence, you should inform your wedding planner or a friend, bridesmaid or bestman.

“We have actually provided a watered-down bottle of the preferred liquor just for pouring drinks for that person,” says Alex Alexander of Alex Events.

Charley Izabella King, a wedding planner from Bluebell Events, also has a few tricks up her sleeve. She reveals that she usually finds the person’s plus one and asks them to help in limiting their alcohol intake. King adds that she’ll also let the bartender and banquet captain know if there are any guests they should keep an eye on.

Katrina Otter, an award-winning wedding planner, agrees.

“If you’ve got guests who you know are big drinkers, tell your caterers or bar staff in advance and ask them to stop serving the guests in question when they deem it’s necessary,” says the expert. “Make sure that there’s plenty of water and non-alcoholic options on hand right through the day and remember that evening food is not only great for giving you a boost of energy later in the day, it’s also very useful for soaking up a day of drink.”

Otter adds that you shouldn’t give any heavy drinkers a big role in your day.

“It’s also helpful to nominate someone who can keep an eye on things and help if things do go awry,” she suggests. “A parent or an uncle is usually a great choice here because these people automatically carry respect. Brief them ahead of time and try not to let someone’s drunken behaviour ruin your day.”

“If they get particularly rowdy, I would ask them to leave,” King told Inside Weddings.

But sometimes, even stone-cold sober guests can create wedding chaos and drama. For example, the entitled mother or mother-in-law who catches main character syndrome and thinks she’s the bride.

Experts suggest gently setting firm boundaries during the wedding planning process. So if your mother or mother-in-law insists on choosing your flowers, Alexander advises saying something along the lines of, “It is so lovely of you to want to pay for and surprise me with the flowers, but I have always looked forward to planning my wedding and especially the flowers! Having you there with me as I choose the look of the wedding means so much to me. Thank you!”

In addition, it may help to give your mom or mother-in-law a dedicated role to keep them busy, and make them feel included. This ideally would be something you’re willing to loosen your grip on.

Don’t hesitate to enlist the help of your wedding planner, or a friend to smooth things over.

“We have diverted many a situation by being fully aware of peoples’ feelings,” says King, “and being comforting to them by understanding the situation and helping to resolve it.”

As a rule of thumb, the less we know about something, the more fascinating it becomes. A missing person’s case where someone vanished without a trace. A crime scene that left investigators with more questions than answers. It makes us want to get to the bottom of what really happened and why no one has been able to figure it out.

One Redditor asked users to share creepy unsolved mysteries that deserve more attention, and they came through with stories that are equal parts intriguing and unsettling. We’ve gathered some of the best ones below. Scroll down to read them.

Shelly Miscavige, David Miscavige's wife (Head of the church of Scientology), who was last seen in public in August 2007...

    More info from Wikipedia:
Michele Diane "Shelly" Miscavige (née Barnett; born January 18, 1961) is an American Scientologist who was last seen in public in August 2007. She is a member of the Church of Scientology's Sea Org who married Scientology leader David Miscavige in 1982. Miscavige worked as her husband's assistant and was involved in managing the Church of Scientology's relationship with high-profile member Tom Cruise.

Since her disappearance in 2007, she has been the subject of speculation and inquiries regarding her whereabouts and well-being. In 2012, attorneys who said they represented her responded by saying she was leading a private life devoted to the Church of Scientology. In August 2013, actress Leah Remini, a former Scientologist and critic of the organization, filed a missing person report regarding Miscavige with the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD). The LAPD closed the investigation within hours and described the report as "unfounded".

    Walter Fischer

He lived in a small village in Slovakia and would go to a nearby town to work in a shoe factory Mon-Fri (returning home to be with his family on weekends). One weekend in January of 1939 he didnt return home.

Several weeks later his wife sends her brother to find him (thinking he was just drinking and choosing not to come home). The brother gets there and speaks to everyone who would know where he was but they all said they hadn't seen him in weeks. His coworkers said that on the Friday where he was due to go home he had said he planned to stay the night and walk to Castle Black (a ruin up in the mountains). This apparently was not a typical thing for him and no info is available on what drove this.

Fearing him d**d up there the brother and some others go up the mountain in search of him. But its January and it is freezing. So they have to abandon the search and accept he likely perished.

Now the extra mystery. 3 months later Walter reappears. He is found in a field more than 1km south of the town or mountain. A local farmer/herder recognises him and sends for his wife and a doctor (recognising he is in a bad condition). When they arrive they realise he is not responding to any questions or verbal prompts (borderline catatonic it seemed) and is covered in burns.

The wife isn't able to take him in so instead he is sent to an asylum. Sadly any further records of Walter or if anyone made any breakthrough in getting him to communicate is lost due to the N**i invasion of Slovakia and the destruction of the asylum and its records.

But its a really fascinating one. Why hike up that mountain in horrible conditions in January? How did he stay alive for 3 months in the Slovakian wilderness and what caused his catatonic state and the burns.

    The Black Dahlia.

    More info from Wikipedia:
Elizabeth Short (July 29, 1924 – c. January 14–15, 1947), posthumously known as the Black Dahlia, was an American woman found m*rdered in the Leimert Park neighborhood of Los Angeles, California, on January 15, 1947. Her case became highly publicized owing to the gruesome nature of the crime, which included the mutilation and bisection of her corpse.

A native of Boston, Short spent her early life in New England and Florida before relocating to California, where her father lived. It is commonly held that she was an aspiring actress, though she had no known acting credits or jobs during her time in Los Angeles. Short acquired the nickname of the Black Dahlia posthumously, as newspapers of the period often nicknamed particularly lurid crimes; the term may have originated from the film noir thriller The Blue Dahlia (1946). After the discovery of her body, the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) began an extensive investigation that produced over 150 suspects but yielded no arrests.

Short's unsolved m*rder and the details surrounding it have had a lasting cultural impact, generating various theories and public speculation. Her life and death have been the basis of numerous books and films, and her m*rder is frequently cited as one of the most famous unsolved m*rders in U.S. history, as well as one of the oldest unsolved cases in Los Angeles County. It has likewise been credited by historians as one of the first major crimes in postwar America to capture national attention.

The Wow! Signal. One strange radio signal from space and then... nothing.

    More info from Wikipedia:
The Wow! signal was a strong narrowband radio signal detected on August 15, 1977, by Ohio State University's Big Ear radio telescope in the United States, then used to support the search for extraterrestrial intelligence. The signal appeared to come from the direction of the constellation Sagittarius and bore expected hallmarks of extraterrestrial origin.

Astronomer Jerry R. Ehman discovered the anomaly a few days later while reviewing the recorded data. On the computer printout, he circled the reading of the signal's intensity, "6EQUJ5", and wrote the comment "Wow!" beside it, leading to the event's widely used name.

The entire signal sequence lasted for the full 72-second window during which Big Ear was able to observe it. Despite numerous follow-up searches and hypotheses (including brief consideration of reflections from space debris, interstellar scintillation, and comet hydrogen clouds), the signal has never recurred, and no explanation, terrestrial or otherwise, has been confirmed. While some researchers have suggested it could represent an extraterrestrial transmission, its single occurrence and lack of replication limit the strength of this interpretation. The Wow! signal has inspired targeted searches, scientific discussion about rare astrophysical phenomena, and references in popular culture.

The Springfield Missouri 3 missing women. 3 women gone with no trace from a home. Nothing in 34 years.

    More info from Wikipedia:
The Springfield Three refers to an unsolved missing persons case that began on June 7, 1992, when friends Suzanne Elizabeth "Suzie" Streeter and Stacy Kathleen McCall, and Streeter's mother, Sherrill Elizabeth Levitt, went missing from Levitt's home in Springfield, Missouri, United States. All of their personal belongings, including cars and purses, were left behind. There were no signs of a struggle except a broken porch light globe; there was also a message on the answering machine that police believe might have provided a clue about the disappearances, but it was inadvertently erased.

In 1997, Robert Craig Cox, a convicted kidnapper and robber, claimed that he knew the women had been m*rdered and that their bodies would never be recovered. Neither their whereabouts nor their remains have ever been discovered. No investigators in the case believe Cox has any credibility.

Also Mateusz Kawecki, 30yr old, Poland. Polish construction worker living in Hanover, Germany for 5 years with his father (sister is also in Hanover). Uncertain about the details but it goes something like this. Receives a phone call from his long term fiancée that she was due delivery of their baby. He leaves Hanover at 11:30pm for his fiancées village in Southern Poland on the 28th of March, 2018 in his BMW, a 679km or so drive (9hrs or so). At about 10:30am his father calls him as he hadn't arrived and he said that he had been stuck at the Polish-German border for 2hrs, citing traffic. He also texts his fiancée to tell her the same thing. By about mid-afternoon, the worried fiancée calls his sister in Hanover, they call Mateus phone, it rings but no one picks up. By evening time they go to Polish police to report him missing but they think it's too soon. Eventually, they open the case. The German police have refused to open a concurrent case as long as the Polish police are investigating. The family ask the Polish police for his SIM to be located as his phone was ringing but they say they couldn't cause it was a German SIM. The German police couldn't either cause the SIM was last located in Poland. But Polish police claim he never entered the border because his car plate registration wasn't captured by cameras at the border. The frustrated family search the whole route for months and fail to find him and no clues come up.

In Sept, a neighbour approaches the family reporting a smell from their barn, the village have noticed throughout summer, thinking there must be a d**d animal. At the end of the barn (as I imagine it) is a tier (a story) cordoned off by a wall forming a kinda attic space. Since they couldn't find the d**d animal, the neighbour asked to check the attic . He finds a pile of clothes and a back pack on the floor. He moves the clothes about to find a severed or decapitated head and a badly decomposed corpse (so damaged it couldn't be identified). However the backpack contains Mateus items, his ID, a Polish water bottle, cigarette packs and stubs but interestingly as well a carton of orange juice (which he never drank cause he detested orange juice since he was a kid) & the clothes were his. Two nooses are tied to the roof.

Following a police search & investigation of the barn. His case was ruled a s*****e. However 4 days later (after his body was found) the family finds (on the lower floor I believe) his shoe...with his amputated decomposing foot still inside! They complain the search was not conducted properly.

The mystery thickens as it is later reported that there were German & Polish public transport tickets found with him. He also checked into a hotel on the German-Polish border with a stranger, who was it? The interesting thing is that Mateus' body was found in the barn of the small village of his family home, he wasn't aiming for there, he was aiming for his house with his fiancée in Southern Poland, a small village 635km away (that's a cross country distance apparently across Germany). Further, his clothes were bloody and some or all of his teeth had been knocked off, sticking to his clothes. His phone was found with his backpack. He made a short 1s call to his uncle on the 29th of March, likely a b**t dial- his uncle never received the call.

His car was never found, neither car nor keys to this day. His family report to have used the barn, throughout the summer and it would have been obvious to them as somehow the attic was reportedly in plain-sight & the barn doors were open if he was there- not to mention the smell. Also, since it is a small village, it's strange that no one in the village caught sight of Mateus, his car or anything about him. It was like he set off from Hanover in the middle of the night to d*e in his family home's barn when he was aiming for his fiancées over 600km away for his child birth. Finally, where was Mateusz really when he received his dad phone call, was he really at the border and obstructed or delayed by traffic? That border section is unmanned except for ANPR cameras...but if he was headed the wrong direction, did he lie to his family & fiancée, why? Who was the stranger? And how about the public transport tickets in Germany & Poland when he had a car & set off in one? Why commit s*****e when he appeared to be anticipating the birth of his child otherwise he would never have set off? Nevermind the amputated foot, the knocked out teeth... which doesn't fit a deteriorating hanging body (though the severed head might) So many mysteries in this case.

What a mystery and such trauma for both him and his family (unless they were somehow involved).

Highway of tears. 100 missing since the 70s.

    More info from Wikipedia:
The Highway of Tears is a 719-kilometre (447 mi) corridor of Highway 16 between Prince George and Prince Rupert in British Columbia, Canada, which has been the location of crimes against many women, beginning in 1969 when the highway was completed. The phrase was coined during a vigil held in Terrace, British Columbia in 1998, by Florence Naziel, who was thinking of the victims' families crying over the loss of their loved ones.

There is a disproportionately high number of Indigenous women on the list of victims, hence the association with the Missing and M*rdered Indigenous Women (MMIW) movement.

Proposed explanations for the years-long toleration of the crimes and the limited progress in identifying culprits include poverty, dr*g ab*se, widespread domestic violence, disconnection with traditional culture and disruption of the family unit through the foster care system and Canadian Indian residential school system. Poverty in particular leads to low rates of vehicle ownership and mobility; thus, hitchhiking is often the only way for many to travel vast distances to see family or go to work, school, or seek medical treatment.

The lack of public transportation between communities was at one time a major factor. Another factor leading to unsolved disappearances is that the area is largely isolated and remote. Soft soil in many areas makes burial easier and carnivorous scavengers often carry away human remains. Additionally, before December 2024, much of the highway had no cellular telephone service.

Brian Shaffer, a 27-year-old medical student who vanished from a bar in Columbus, Ohio, in 2006. CCTV shows him enter but he never leaves.

    More info from Wikipedia:
In the early hours of April 1, 2006, Brian Randall Shaffer, a 27‑year‑old medical student at the Ohio State University College of Medicine, disappeared in Columbus, Ohio. He had spent the previous night, March 31, having drinks with friends at a campus‑area bar to mark the start of spring break. He later became separated from them, and they assumed he had gone home.

Security footage from outside the second‑floor entrance recorded Shaffer briefly speaking with two women just before 2 a.m. before walking out of frame. No video shows him exiting the building, and he has not been seen or heard from since. The case received national media attention.

Shaffer's disappearance has been especially puzzling to investigators because the bar had no other publicly accessible exits at the time, aside from a nearby service door. Columbus police have explored several theories about what happened. Some scrutiny has focused on a friend who was with Shaffer that night, though he was advised not to take polygraph tests. Other speculation has included a possible connection to the purported Smiley Face serial k**ler, but police rejected any link to the alleged k**ler, consistent with the FBI and other agencies. It has also been suggested that Shaffer might be alive and living elsewhere under a new identity.

    Tristan Brübach.

I am from germany and have been following this case for over ten years now.

It is honestly one of the most disturbing mysteries I have ever come across and almost no one outside of Germany seems to know about it.

In 1998 in Frankfurt a 13 year old boy named Tristan Brübach was m******d in broad daylight in a tunnel near a train station. The k**ler did not just k**l him. He performed some kind of surgical mutilation on the body and took body parts with him as trophies. Experts strongly suggest that this was a case of cannibalism.

The weirdest part is that it happened in the middle of the day in a busy public area. Witnesses saw a man with a ponytail and police checked over 14000 people but the guy just vanished. It has been over 25 years and the trail is ice cold. It feels like the k**ler just walked into thin air.

Morgan Nick. June 9, 1995, six-year old Morgan and her mother, Colleen Nick, attended a little league baseball game in Alma, Arkansas. At 10:30 PM, Morgan and her friends asked if they could leave the stands to catch fireflies. Initially, Colleen was hesitant to let her but was convinced by the other parents to let her. Morgan was last seen by her friends at 10:45 PM alone near her mom's car emptying the sand from her shoes. Her friends also reported seeing a "creepy" man talking to Morgan as she put her shoes back on.

Morgan's friends returned to the stands without her, told Colleen that she was at the car. But when Morgan's mother returned to the car, she was not there, and Morgan was not seen or heard from again.

Police only ever named one person of interest, Billy Lincks. This guy died in prison for an unrelated charge in 2000. They identified fibers in his red truck that were similar to Morgan's shirt. In 2024, police revealed there was DNA evidence that strongly indicated Morgan was in the truck.

But we might never know what really happened to her or where she is.

Her parents started the Morgan Nick Foundation to both help parents cope with the disappearances of their children, and help prevent children disappearances. June 1995 was before the Amber Alert was created. Furthermore, in Arkansas, it's known as the Morgan Nick Amber Alert.

I'm from Arkansas, I was born in 1997. My mom would tell me about this horrible cold case throughout my childhood and it's stuck with me to adulthood, I guess.

    John P. Wheeler III:

Wheeler, a highly connected Pentagon official and presidential aide, suddenly began behaving erratically in December 2010. Surveillance footage captured him wandering the streets confused, disheveled, and carrying only one shoe while asking strangers for help. He had recently been involved in a bitter feud with neighbors and was reportedly linked to a bizarre smoke-b**b incident. Days later, his battered body was found in a Delaware landfill. His d***h was ruled a homicide, but no suspect has ever been identified.

    The missing Malaysian airplane.

    More info from Wikipedia:
Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 (MH370 / MAS370) was an international passenger flight operated by Malaysia Airlines that disappeared from radar on 8 March 2014, while flying from Kuala Lumpur International Airport in Malaysia to its planned destination, Beijing Capital International Airport in China. The cause of its disappearance has not been determined. It is widely regarded as the greatest mystery in aviation history and remains the single deadliest case of aircraft disappearance.

The crew of the Boeing 777-200ER, registered as 9M-MRO, last communicated with air traffic control (ATC) around 38 minutes after takeoff when the flight was over the South China Sea. The aircraft was lost from ATC's secondary surveillance radar screens minutes later but was tracked by the Malaysian military's primary radar system for another hour, deviating westward from its planned flight path. It left radar range 200 nautical miles (370 km; 230 mi) west-northwest of Penang Island in northwestern Peninsular Malaysia.

With all 227 passengers and 12 crew aboard confirmed dead, the disappearance of Flight 370 was the deadliest incident involving a Boeing 777, the deadliest of 2014, and the deadliest in Malaysia Airlines' history until it was surpassed in all three regards by Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 on 17 July 2014. Relying mostly on the analysis of data from the Inmarsat satellite with which the aircraft last communicated, the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) initially proposed that a hypoxia event was the most likely cause given the available evidence, although no consensus has been reached among investigators concerning this theory. At various stages of the investigation, possible hijacking scenarios were considered, including crew involvement, and suspicion of the aircraft's cargo manifest; many disappearance theories regarding the flight have also been reported by the media.

The search for the missing aircraft became the most expensive search in the history of aviation. It focused initially on the South China Sea and Andaman Sea, before a novel analysis of the aircraft's automated communications with an Inmarsat satellite indicated that the aircraft had travelled far southward over the southern Indian Ocean. Several pieces of debris washed ashore in the western Indian Ocean during 2015 and 2016; many of these were confirmed to have originated from Flight 370. After a three-year search across 120,000 km2 (46,000 sq mi) of ocean failed to locate the aircraft, the Joint Agency Coordination Centre heading the operation suspended its activities in January 2017. A second search launched in January 2018 by private contractor Ocean Infinity also ended without success after six months. The Malaysian Ministry of Transport's final report from July 2018 was inconclusive. It highlighted Malaysian ATC's fruitless attempts to communicate with the aircraft shortly after its disappearance.

In the absence of a definitive cause of disappearance, air transport industry safety recommendations and regulations citing Flight 370 have been implemented to prevent a repetition of the circumstances associated with the loss. These include increased battery life on underwater locator beacons, lengthening of recording times on flight data recorders and cockpit voice recorders, and new standards for aircraft position reporting over open ocean.

In the coming years, the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie.

    More info from Wikipedia:
"On February 1, 2026, Nancy Guthrie (née Long), the American 84‑year‑old mother of NBC News journalist and Today co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, was kidnapped from her home in Catalina Foothills, a suburb of Tucson, Arizona. Evidence recovered at the residence indicated that Guthrie had been taken against her will, and Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos stated that he believed she had been abducted.

A multi‑agency investigation led by the Pima County Sheriff's Department, with assistance from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), US Customs and Border Protection (CBP), and search-and-rescue teams, has included extensive forensic analysis, neighborhood canvassing, and review of surveillance footage. Bloodstains found at the scene were confirmed to be Nancy's. Multiple ransom notes of undetermined origin demanded payment in cryptocurrency, with two deadlines that had passed by February 9. On February 10, the FBI released still images along with a short video from a video‑doorbell camera, showing an "armed individual" wearing a mask and carrying a backpack tampering with said doorbell camera on Nancy's property prior to her disappearance.

Family appeals on social media have not yet yielded any "proof of life" sought from the person or persons who abducted Nancy Guthrie. On February 24, the family offered $1 million for information that assists in her recovery. Her condition and whereabouts remain unknown. The case has drawn international attention, with Savannah Guthrie suspending her broadcasting duties, including coverage of the 2026 Winter Olympics, to participate in the ongoing search."

Dorothy Jane Scott- this always creeped me out because of the time put in and how one minute you’re helping your friend and next your worst nightmare happens.

From Wikipedia: Dorothy Jane Scott (April 23, 1948 — May 28, 1980) was an American woman who disappeared on May 28, 1980, in Anaheim, California. After driving two co-workers to the hospital, Scott went to fetch her car to take them back to their workplace. However, as her car approached them, it sped away; neither could see who was driving as its headlights had blinded them. The co-workers reported Scott missing a couple of hours later, after not hearing from her. In the preceding months, Scott had been receiving anonymous phone calls from a man who had reportedly been stalking her and had left threatening messages.
In June 1980, a man called The Orange County Register, a local newspaper that had reported Scott's disappearance, and claimed that he had killed Scott. Police believe the caller was Scott's killer. From 1980 to 1984, Scott's mother also received phone calls from a man who claimed to have Scott or to have killed her. None of the calls could be traced, however, because the caller would not stay on the line long enough. In August 1984, partial human remains were found and later identified as Scott's. No arrests have been made in Scott's case.

    Susan Swedell

On the evening of January 19, 1988, 19-year-old Susan Swedell vanished during a blizzard in Lake Elmo, MN.

After finishing her shift at K-Mart in Oak Park Heights, Susan stopped at a gas station while experiencing car trouble. She left her car at the gas station and was seen getting into an older-model sedan, possibly a late-1970s Ford LTD with a white man who had shoulder-length sandy-brown hair and was wearing a waist length coat.

Susan Swedell has not been seen or heard from since that night. Her car, along with her purse was found the next morning at the gas station (now the site of a Holiday Station) on the outskirts of Lake Elmo.

The d***h of Noah Donohoe, age 14. Mixed race kid in Ireland. Left home at 3 am wearing flip flops, shorts, shirt and headsets he returned at 4 am barefoot without his headset. Went to school, came back. Told his mum at about 4/5pm he is going to cycle to his friends place across on the other side of Belfast (seems quite the distance). He packed a bag of clothing & laptop & left wearing a helmet, jacket, shorts and trainers. He is spotted on CCTV (& by passerby) an hour later at 5pm in central Belfast by Queens University then again on CCTV naked and without his bike or backpack...and entering some public space but which was only open to residence. At 9pm, his mother reports him missing. He was missing for 5 days before being found d**d & naked in a sewer drain, even further away than from his last sighting. Past-portum, revealed cause of d***h to be drowning. Coroner's verdict: accidental drowning. Still a mystery, how or why he died. Where he went to earlier that morning, why he was barefoot and where was his headset, why he was naked on the streets of central Belfast at 6pm, where was his bike? His backpack was found close to Ulster university, where someone tried to pawn off his laptop (he was jailed for 3 months). Another mystery to me is why his mum would let him cycle such a long way on an Autumn/ November evening alone (would have certainly been dark or getting dark by the time he left and soon after). Bet there are deep regrets and she is devastated. No one has ever been charged...after all the verdict is that it was accidental.

The Donna Kay Cloud case from 2016 in Splendora, Texas. She was friends with many of the people I went to high school with, but I personally never met her.

She was 19 with a 4 year old son, and had been dealt quite a rough hand in life and made a few mistakes of her own, but was very much trying to turn her life around. She was going on a blind date with a guy she had been talking to, and left her dad’s house I think with the guy and a couple friends in his truck to eat at Texas Roadhouse. She never made it there.

All 3 guys she was with were interviewed and “cleared” and her own dad keeps changing his story and refuses to fully cooperate. Her cell phone even pinged at a location 2 months after her disappearance. This story haunts me because it’s very close to home and feels like a true embodiment of the good ole boy system in SETX where I’m from. And she’d NEVER leave her son. Somebody is protecting somebody.

The Yuba County Five. Such a terribly sad case and little to no answers.

    More info from Wikipedia:
The Yuba County Five were young men from Yuba County, California, United States, each with mild intellectual disabilities or psychiatric conditions, who were reported missing after attending a college basketball game at California State University, Chico (also known as Chico State), on the night of February 24, 1978. Four of them—Bill Sterling, 29; Jack Huett, 24; Ted Weiher, 32; and Jack Madruga, 30—were later found dead; the fifth, Gary Mathias, 25, has never been found.

Several days after their disappearance, Madruga's car, a 1969 Mercury Montego the group drove to Chico, was found abandoned in a remote area of Plumas National Forest, on a high mountain dirt road far out of their way back to Yuba County. Investigators could not determine why the car was abandoned, as it was in good working order and could easily have been pushed out of the snowpack it was in. At that time, no trace of the men was found.

In June 1978, four of the men's bodies were discovered after the snow had melted. Ted Weiher was found inside a United States Forest Service (USFS) trailer some 20 miles north of the abandoned car. Only bones were left of Jack Madruga, Bill Sterling, and Jackie Huett as a result of scavenging animals; Weiher had apparently lived for as long as three months after the men were last seen, starving to death despite an ample supply of food and heating materials in and near the trailer. Weiher was missing his shoes; investigators found Mathias' own shoes in the USFS trailer, suggesting Mathias also survived for some time beyond the group's last sighting.

A local man later came forward, claiming that he had spent the same night in his own car a short distance from where the Mercury was found. The witness told police that he saw and heard people around his car that night, and twice called for help, only for them to grow silent and turn off their flashlights. This, and the considerable distance from the car to where the bodies were found, has led to suspicions of foul play.

Deborah Deann Poe (often referred to as Debrah Poe or Deborah Poe) was a 25-year-old convenience store clerk who vanished without a trace from an Orlando, Florida Circle K on February 4, 1990

The Last Sighting: Deborah was working the overnight shift at a Circle K near the intersection of Aloma Avenue and Hall Road. A regular customer found the store completely abandoned at 4:00 a.m.

The Store's Condition: There were no signs of a struggle, and the cash register was completely untouched, with no money missing.

Personal Belongings: Deborah’s car (a red Toyota Celica) was parked in the lot, with her keys, purse, and latest paycheck securely locked inside. Her uniform was discovered neatly folded behind the counter.

The Megadeth T-Shirt Man: A customer reported seeing an unknown man wearing a "Megadeth" rock band t-shirt behind the counter at 3:15 a.m. He was never identified or located.

Police Investigation: Scent dogs tracked her path from behind the store to the nearby road, suggesting she was forcibly abducted and driven away in an unknown vehicle.

The strange deaths of Kris Kremers and Lisanne Froon in Panama.

    More info from Wikipedia:
Kris Kremers and Lisanne Froon were two Dutch students who disappeared on 1 April 2014, while hiking a trail called El Pianista in Panama. After an extensive search, portions of their bodies were found a few months later. Their cause of death could not be determined definitively; Dutch authorities working with forensic and search-rescue investigators initially thought it likely the students had accidentally fallen from a cliff after becoming lost. The circumstances and aftermath of their disappearance have resulted in much speculation about their final days.

Although many theories have been presented as to what happened to Kremers and Froon, no official cause of death has been ruled. Panamanian authorities came under fire for allegedly mishandling the disappearance and aftermath.

The disappearance of Anne-Elisabeth Hagen in Norway.

Halloween morning October 31, 2018, 68-year-old Anne-Elisabeth Hagen vanished from her home near Oslo. When her husband, businessman Tom Hagen, returned home from work, he claimed to find signs of a struggle and a ransom note demanding €9 million in the cryptocurrency Monero. The note threatened that she would be k****d if police were contacted.

What makes the case especially strange is that police secretly investigated it as a kidnapping for months, but later concluded the kidnapping itself may have been staged. They eventually shifted to the theory that Anne-Elisabeth had been m******d and that the ransom note was part of an elaborate deception. Tom Hagen was arrested in 2020 on suspicion of m****r or complicity, but was released within days and the case against him was ultimately dropped because investigators could not prove his involvement.

There are a lot of odd details: the ransom demand was in cryptocurrency years before crypto ransom cases became common, the note was written in awkward Norwegian, police found cable ties and traces suggesting a struggle, the family dog had been locked away, and despite years of investigation involving thousands of tips, surveillance footage, international forensic assistance, and extensive searches, nobody knows for certain whether Anne-Elisabeth was kidnapped, m******d, or by whom. Her body has never been found.

Nearly eight years later, the case remains unsolved.

Terrence Woods, someone I knew as a student.

He was filming something in rural Idaho and allegedly just ran away into the woods, never to be seen again. In nearly any article I see, he's described as gentle, friendly and kind, and that completely checks out with my experience with him. It all seems so wrong, but there doesn't seem to be any lead otherwise.

Hope you're still out there man, you were great singing Linger by the Cranberries on your guitar.

Elizabeth Barraza - another one with a subreddit - possibly more commonly known but a woman is setting up for a garage sale in the morning and someone shows up in a pickup truck, confronts her and sh**ts her d**d. It's captured on multiple doorbell cameras yet to this day over 6 years later we do not know who the culprit is. Numerous potential suspects like the Huisentruit case but no "for sures".

One that doesn't get nearly as much attention as some famous mysteries is the Lead Masks Case in Brazil.

In 1966, two electronics technicians were found d**d on a hill near Niterói, Brazil. They were wearing formal suits, waterproof coats, and strange homemade lead masks that covered their eyes. Nearby was a notebook containing cryptic instructions, including a reference to taking capsules and waiting for a signal. There were no obvious signs of violence, and investigators never conclusively determined what happened.

The fact that some people vanish without a trace and nobody ever finds out what happened still messes with me.

  • Monday 22 June 2026 - 05:00

Fashion is all about taking risks. If you leave the house knowing that some people will despise your outfit, you’re probably making the right choices. But there are some articles of clothing that are essentially universally hated, so if you’re ready to be a fashion critic, we’ve got plenty of pieces for you to pick apart right here.

Bored Panda has searched far and wide for comedically bad clothing design fails, so we’ve compiled a list of our findings below. From text that makes no sense to color schemes that might remind you of something disgusting, there’s no limit to the ways that designers can mess up. We hope you enjoy channeling your inner Miranda Priestly and scrolling through these hilarious faux pas, and be sure to upvote the ones that you can’t help but laugh at!

Have you ever had a meltdown after going shopping for jeans? Perhaps you’ve tried on 25 pairs, but nothing fits just right. Everything is too baggy in the waist, yet too tight in the hips. Or nothing is the exact cut and color that you had in mind. So you give up, buy a pretzel, and leave the mall feeling ten times worse than you did when you arrived.

We all have to wear clothes pretty much all of the time, so you would think that designing cute, comfortable pieces of clothing would be extremely easy. Yet for some reason, it seems like bizarre and uncomfortable items are the norm, not the exception. As you can clearly see from this list, there’s no limit to the number of terrible pieces that you can buy, no matter where you live.

According to Vogue, part of the reason why we’re all struggling to find decent clothing nowadays is that nobody knows where to shop. Fast fashion brands are accessible and affordable, but the quality of their pieces is terrible, and their impact on the planet is even worse. Meanwhile, brands that were historically a bit higher end seem to have plummeted in quality in recent years, so you don’t always get what you pay for.

And luxury brands are obviously off limits for the average person. When half of Americans are struggling to even buy groceries, spending a significant amount of money on clothing is out of the question. But apparently, social media has also played a role in the collective fashion identity crisis.

“The pandemic definitely threw the collective style zeitgeist for a loop,” writer and fashion commentator Alexandra Hildreth told Vogue. “Many consumers stopped shopping for office and non-athleisure daywear altogether, and many others got their own style identity swept up in TikTok’s unprecedented trend acceleration.”

It has become increasingly difficult for social media users to discern what is actually their own taste versus what they think they like because they saw it online.

Meanwhile, social media has certainly expanded the definition of what is considered fashionable. Clashing patterns, skirts layered over dresses, and using skirts as tops would have been fashion faux pas ten years ago. But for some reason, nowadays, many people seem to be dressing “ugly” on purpose.

Fashion lover Emilee Russell wrote a piece for her Substack examining this phenomenon, where she noted that unflattering silhouettes are suddenly being celebrated. And part of the reason for this may simply be because we’re bored.

“We live in a time where fashion history and trends from decades ago can be dug up in about 3 seconds,” Russell explains. “We have immediate access to inspiration from all eras of style via the internet. That being said, it seems that because of this (and the unfortunate nature of micro trends thanks to social media), we’ve mowed through just about every possible trend there is and seen them styled in all the ‘right’ ways according to the style makers. We’re fatigued. We want something new.” And the solution to this might just be breaking the rules.

The Guardian also proclaimed in 2024 that “dressing pretty is over,” noting that “this is fashion’s ugly decade.” But even within the realm of unflattering fashion, you can’t be too ugly. Styling questionable pieces still requires an eye for design, and looking unkempt won’t make anyone envy that dress that makes you look like a pilgrim. One thing that might help is adding plenty of accessories. If you’re covered in jewelry, hair clips, a scarf, and a belt, one unattractive piece won’t stand out so much. And apparently, maximalism is in.

It’s also important to remember that you can wear whatever the hell you want, whenever you want, regardless of what’s trending on TikTok. If you find a piece that you love, don’t be scared to wear it. For all you know, it might become trendy next year. And even if it doesn’t, personal style should be personal. At the end of the day, it’s your life. And if you feel confident in something, then it’s certainly worth strutting down the street in.

When you work from home, you often have the freedom to tackle little household tasks whenever you like. Maybe you clean out a closet during lunch or take the trash out for a quick breather between meetings. But what happens when neighbors start judging how you handle your own space?

One man, working from home, often mowed his lawn at odd hours—shirtless, thanks to the heat. One day, while chatting with a neighbor, her husband showed up, noticed him, and later demanded he “dress appropriately” for mowing his own yard. Keep reading to see how this man responded with some perfectly petty revenge.

What a person does on their own time and on their own property is their business

Working from home often boosts productivity, allowing people to focus deeply without the usual office distractions and interruptions

Ever since the pandemic, the workplace landscape has changed dramatically. One of the biggest shifts has been the rise of work-from-home setups, something very few companies offered before. Employees suddenly had the freedom to structure their own day, take quick breaks, and even run small household errands between meetings. Tasks that used to feel impossible during office hours could now fit into micro-moments throughout the day. Work became less tied to a desk and more about results and flexibility.

Even as the world slowly returns to offices and commutes, remote work has proven it’s more than just a temporary experiment; it’s here to stay for millions of people worldwide. Companies are beginning to recognize that productivity isn’t tied to a desk, a cubicle, or even a physical office building. Employees, on the other hand, have discovered a newfound sense of freedom and control over their days, shaping work around life rather than the other way around. Research into remote work shows a fascinating mix of outcomes: many report getting more done, feeling more focused, and even experiencing less stress, while others face the challenge of blurred boundaries, isolation, and a sense of disconnection from colleagues. For countless workers, this hybrid reality has reshaped what “going to work” even means.

Studies show that working from home often leads to a noticeable boost in productivity, and the reasons go beyond simply being at a desk. Without the constant interruptions of a busy office: phones ringing, coworkers dropping by, and the endless chatter, people can truly focus on their work and accomplish tasks more efficiently. Emails get answered faster, reports are completed on time, and projects move forward with a clarity that’s hard to achieve in a crowded office environment.

At the same time, stress levels can drop significantly when employees have control over their own environment. There are no awkward water-cooler conversations, no office politics lurking in the background, and far fewer micro-distractions pulling your attention away. Instead, you can arrange your workspace, set the lighting, and even control the background noise to match your mood and energy.

Another major advantage of working from home is the incredible control it gives you over your own schedule. Suddenly, the rigid 9-to-5 no longer dictates your every move—you decide when to tackle that big project, when to take a mental break, or even when to fit in household chores that would normally feel impossible on a workday. This flexibility means you can enjoy meals on your own timetable, grab a snack when your energy dips, or handle personal errands without feeling guilty or rushed. For many, this sense of autonomy transforms the daily grind into something that feels manageable, even liberating, giving life a rhythm that aligns with your own energy, needs, and priorities.

Work from home also gives employees a much better work-life balance. One of the biggest perks is cutting out long, stressful commutes. Imagine spending an hour to reach work and another hour and a half stuck in traffic on the way back; that’s two and a half hours of your day gone before you even log off. Remote work eliminates that, giving people extra time to exercise, spend time with family, or just relax. The time saved can transform daily life, turning previously frustrating days into productive, satisfying ones.

An orange and white lawnmower sits in a lush green yard, representing the yard work inciting neighbor conflict.

Image credits: Joel Hägele (not the actual photo)

Remote work can sometimes lead to feelings of isolation, making it harder to stay connected with colleagues and maintain social interactions

Of course, there are downsides to remote work. Studies note that isolation can be a big issue. Without colleagues around, it’s easy to feel lonely or disconnected from the team. The casual interactions that make office life enjoyable (the jokes, the quick check-ins, the brainstorming sessions) are lost when you’re at home. Employees can also struggle with home office setups: chairs that aren’t ergonomic, small desks, poor lighting, and spotty Wi-Fi all contribute to physical discomfort and mental fatigue.

On the flip side, remote work can also blur boundaries between work and personal life. People often end up working longer hours because there’s no clear “end of day,” support from leadership may feel distant, and social interactions are limited. It can be difficult to switch off, making work-life balance harder to maintain despite the absence of commuting. Without intentional breaks and boundaries, home can start to feel more like an extension of the office than a sanctuary.

Clearly, working from home comes with its pros and cons. It offers freedom, flexibility, and the chance to shape your own day, but it also brings challenges like isolation and blurred boundaries. In this particular case, the man mowing his lawn becomes a small but telling reminder of the balance remote work brings; how it grants personal freedom while sometimes creating unexpected social friction and negotiations with neighbors. The key takeaway? Remote work isn’t flawless, but approached with awareness, a sense of humor, and a bit of strategy, it can make life and even something as simple as mowing the lawn, feel lighter and more manageable. Pandas, we want to hear from you: what are your thoughts on this balance between personal freedom and neighborly expectations?

    from Korben

    ---

    type: BigQuery Table

    title: Orders

description: One row per completed customer order.

    resource: https://console.cloud.google.com/bigquery?p=acme&d=sales&t=orders

    tags: [sales, revenue]

    timestamp: 2026-05-28T14:30:00Z

    ---

    # Schema

    | Column     | Type   | Description                         |

    |------------|--------|-------------------------------------|

    | order_id   | STRING | Globally unique order identifier.   |

    | customer_id| STRING | FK to [customers](/tables/customers.md). |

    # Joins

    Joined with [customers](/tables/customers.md) on `customer_id`.

Ordre de grandeur : 6 M€/an.
